Tuesday, March 09, 2004 The Montreal SPCA is trying to find out who snipped off parts of a kitten's ears and tail before the tortured feline was dumped on the shelter's doorstep yesterday. Horrified workers discovered a mewling 5-month-old cat wrapped in a towel yesterday morning after a man ran into the shelter on Jean Talon St. and mumbled incoherently about "a bloody towel outside," then ran away. Strangely, the towel appeared clean on the outside but the man's clothes were splattered with blood, Montreal SPCA director Pierre Barnotti said. The kitten had the tips of both ears sheared off, a piece of its tail snipped and its front claws chopped to the skin, which was bleeding. "We're very disturbed. This is extreme cruelty," Barnotti said. "This kitten has an open wound on either side of its head. And it cannot stand." Shelter officials initially suspected one of two scenarios: Either the cat suffered severe frostbite or it had been tortured. "It couldn't be touched," said Barnotti, who named the kitten Lucky "because he's lucky to have found us." A veterinarian later confirmed the cat had been deliberately maimed. Lucky is thin, but not malnourished. "He's eating now and purring. Even with his ears cut off, he's still absolutely adorable," Barnotti said. Lucky needs a home for a few weeks while he recovers. "He needs a normal home," Barnotti said. "He needs some tender loving care, some caresses." Although SPCA investigators said it was an isolated incident, other events late last year and yesterday might be connected. A man showed up at the SPCA yesterday afternoon and mentioned a missing cat that had lost part of an ear "because it had got into a cat fight," Barnotti said. Also, SPCA investigators are looking for a man who sought to foster a pregnant cat late last year. Last year 18,000 dogs and cats were abandoned at the SPCA. Anyone wishing to adopt Lucky or foster him while he's recovering is asked to call the Montreal SPCA at (514) 735-9172. sorry, maybe this should be in news postings and articles but i thought everyone should see how sick this world is. anyways i tried to call to adopt the cat, but i never got through. i hope someone took it. |

It's ironic how people define term 'racism' solely to describe unjustified hatred towards a specific ethnicities or religions and neglect to include hatred towards other species. I guess in today's society people view hatred towards an "inferior" species as insignificant. Perhaps our huge superiority complex sometimes allows us to forget that we should all be given an equal opportunity at life. It's unfortunate that we as a species have chosen to exploit every natural resource available including other life on the planet. I've recently watched the movie Baraka which I would describe as a true gaia experience. It's a documentary filmed in 24 countries which captures the very essence of life itself. It describes cultures, systems of society, and a message of duality . There are no main actors or storyline but the movie presents an extremely powerful message about how we function as global society, and the social systems which we are a part of... For any of you who have yet to see this film I would highly recommend it. It opened my eyes to certain aspects of life which I had previously overlooked. The reason I'm mentioning this is because of one particular scene which exposes the cruel practices performed on chickens inside a meat processing plant. I challenge anyone reading this to watch the scene I'm describing and bite into a chicken sandwich right after without puking. |
