4 Elements And The Rave Scene?

Just wondering what the state of the relationship between the hiphop community and the rave scene is like across Canada (and elsewhere). Here in Winnipeg, we don't really have a rave scene to speak of anymore, but the connection between the two used to be quite strong. Graf, breaking, lyricism, and tablism used to have hooks right into the warehouse parties; the headz and the kidz used to get along no problem. As time went on, they started to seperate, but styles like jungle and d'n'b still kept a relationship - often the same MC you'd see at a hiphop show one night, would be at a jungle show the next. (And in as much as nobody really said it out loud: everybody likes eating e, be you raver or not, so that was a likely canditate for connectivity as well. :) ) I'm curious because i used to be into both scenes, reppin the 4 elements on friday, and suckin on soothers come saturday. I moved away from the rave scene in general years ago, but the other night there was a party that i was asked to MC a set for. The two dj's tagged between jump-up and dark jungle, but most of the kidz in the place didn't seem to have any idea what was going on. Only a handful of hoodie-clad twenty-somethings, lined along the walls, were getting into the lyrics and hollering back when i called for response.. everybody else just sort of milled about. Is this what it's come to? A bunch of children, so homogenized on basic 4/4 dance music, that nobody appreciates the finer complexities and nuances of jungle and MC'ing? Has the seperation between hiphop and rave become so distinct that the two are mutually exclusive? Well, it has here, i guess - but what about where you party? |

| Coolness: 38575 | It just occured to me that when i say MC, i don't mean the idiot on the mic spouting banal catchphrases for an hour. I mean an actual lyricist with coherent rhymes and something relatively meaningful to say. :) |

| Coolness: 178770 | Yeah, well I've never heard an MC during a rave before, but I think I understand the kidz who "didn't react".
I've been listening to electronica for years now, and well, when I hear other types of music, what capts my attention is the rhythm and the melodies, not the lyrics... Because I got used to pay attention to rhythm in electronica, and also because the lyrics in that type of music are made to be part of a melody, and not to be the main thing in the song... So with hip hop, it's the lyrics that are the base of the song, and for me and surely other freaks too, we get disortiented.. .Like, where's the melody? Where's the rhythm? What's going on!!! I know there's a rhythm in the rapper's speech, but it's just not "natural" for us to pay attention to it... I don't know if you understand, it's kinda hard to explain :( |

Personnally i prefer the organic roots of it all I mean i dig mc's n' hiphop's influence on drumn'bass I like parties where people just get blazed n' drunk instead of popping pills like peanuts Maybe i'm getting out-of-topic so maybe i should shut up |

 Coolness: 174215 | The majority of party kids around here, we don't call ourselves ravers anymore...cos well, raver seems to be synonymous with candy kid, do like hip-hop.
Now i haven't been to a show in about a year, the last show was Atrak and swollen members @ cabaret. Oh moka only played, i didn’t like his beats too much. But mostly the groups are segregated here in musical divisions. I think there are about 5 of us here who listen to metal. I think most "ravers" become too infatuated with the music and the culture that they don't pay much attention to anything else. I know i was like that for about a year...lucky i escaped the clutches of the electronic music and was able to look around and appreciate any style with talent, ranging from Trip Hop to hip hop to death metal, but that’s me. To each their own. |

The only type of music I like is electronica, and well new wave stuffs... Anyway, these styles all have synths :P Guess I'm a digital kid... However, I can like other musics too, but not as much as electronica. And hip hop... Well depends... *intelligent* hip hop is kinda nice :) Even if I have difficulty to get the words lol But hip hop like "yow mutha fucka yow yow dawgz"... Not interested at all! ;) |

| Coolness: 174215 | well seb i've always been into death metal/metal: in flames, dark tranquility, at the gates, Spineshank;). But i can respect good house like Kevin Yost or Cassius. Also my adoration towards underground hip hop is quite predominant in my cd in my car: JMT, Cannibal Ox, Lost Children of Babylon.
To me it is about diversity and talent. I can't listen to metalcore all day long, i need my fix of so solid or herbaliser every once in a while. I'd like to see some more trip hop in lounges. Or some jazzy house...miam Cross over of metalcore and rave music? Haha never. The only thing I can think of is, shizit. |

 Coolness: 150585 | yea, I would have to agree with Jeff, that when it comes to music (in Montreal), the people stick to what they know, and dont bother listening to anything else.
Ask some teenie-bopper to what she/he listenins to and it will most likely be: Justin Timberlake and 50 cent and not Infected Mushroom. Just like a Hip-Hopper would say: Mos Def or Common. and it wont be Britney Spears And ravers/clubbers/junglists/..whatever are the same. They will stick to what they know, and what culture they reside in. However... There are always exceptions to every rule. Such as Jeff and his Emo-stuff/ Hardcore rock and Electronic music (can't be specific cuz I dont know exactly what you listen to). And myself, who will listen to Happy Hardcore and Notorious BIG, and even the occasional Alternative. So the point of all this I suppose is that YES, we are segregated to our own Styles of Music and Life. But that doesn't mean your not going to find Mr.Hip-Hop, singing ShootingStar. My 2 cents. :p |

The problem is the close-minded idiots who think that if you don't listen to the kind of music they like (or in neil's case, the music they make) then you know nothing and are stupid.
Quite often, the kids are more willing to experiment and listen to new things than the old farts. |

There are many open-minded people out there who will listen to many things, no matter what the genre is. (And as for what people listen to on ravewave, I dont know because I hardly know anyone), but if you look at all the music athors, all of them are mostly Hardcore, Trance, HHC, etc.. Considering this Website is called RAVEWAVE; it's a given that theres going to be "RAVE" music. Which strengthens my original point: People stick to what they know... And doesn't necessarily mean they're stupid. |
