Stop expecting things handed to you on a silver platter and do a little research for yourself once in a while.

I bet Ian's problem is that he's running around looking for a crack to WinRAR itself, as opposed to a decryption tool for the RAR compression format.

No, I think he knew what he was looking for. He just has a habit of asking before looking for himself.

well see, instead of wasting my time hunting around for something that could take a long time, i tend to ask others i know, if they know.. thereby saving me time.

this isn't cause i'm lazy, it's cause its a good way of finding things faster.

and i'm not an idiot, i know what i was looking for.

It's a bad mentality to have. Shows that your used to getting things done for you and that you don't like doing them yourself.

no.. it doesn't show that at all.

if i have a question, i don't immediatly run off to the library and dive into books to find out, i ask someone who might know, and be able to get the answer quickly. saves a shitload of time.

a lot of people do it..

Which is precisley what's wrong with people. Taking an easy way out of doing something that you will learn from. Like people doing math. It's all about having a calculator now, people can't do algebra or long division in their head anymore, they need a calculator. People don't want to read a book, they want to wait for the movie (ie: LotR)

People want to be spoonfed things because they feel they deserve to know it, but don't want to do any work to look for what they want.

Thanks to the internet and high speed, people have become so fucking lazy it's not even funny. Everyone has gotten so used to instant gratification that they don't want to work for anything anymore.
Go to the kitchen and make food? Why? I can order in!
Go rent a movie or see a movie in theaters? Why? I can download whatever I want!
I need to write a CV, but I don't know what they should look like. Oh, look, WORD has templates!
How do I write a thesis? Look, more templates in WORD!
I want porn. Go buy a magazine or rent a movie? I can download it for free!

The internet has made people so fucking lazy it's unbelievable.

Fuck that

the internet has made me the anti sloth.

So much work mainting my irc channels, my websites, my projects, making money, finding old movies, setting up shell accounts, dealing with stupid resellers and even more idiotic datacenters, dealing with packet kiddies, dealing with clients.

Fuck it, I bet if there was no internet, I would be a sloth.

But then again, I reap in the rewards. I have free access to Saltwater Chimp so I get 24/7 southpark/futurama/family guy/news radio, whenever I want it, and soon simpons and sienfeld will be added. That alone makes life worth living.

Yeah, but it goes back to one key thing, I think: BBSes. Man, remember downloading a 10 meg game and it took you 4 hours? Now, people cancel a 10 meg MPEG if it looks like it'll take more than 1 minute to come in. We learned the HARD way, how to use computers, how to set things up, how to troubleshoot why things weren't working the way they should, etc., whereas 90% of the people on ravewave couldn't set up their own Sympatico HSE following the instructions and using the USB modem! Like wtf, that's just stupidity. People are so used to things getting handed to them as soon as they want to that they don't bother to look for the complicated things to find. It's like people prefer watching a movie over reading a book. The movie is "instant gratification", you can just sit there and not have to process anything, whereas reading takes time, effort and memory. No one is willing to spend a month going through LotR when they can just spend 9 hours (heh) watching it.

For people who use their brains often, the internet is very much an anti-sloth tool. For the rest, it's like americans and food. If it's not fast, easy and efortless, it's not worth doing.

fred, movies vs. books is a retarded argument. I hate reading novels, but i very much enjoy watching movies.

Movies have music and scenery that do not exist in books. Movies have so much more than a book ever would. Saying that movies have no imagination is also stupid shit (which is most people's arguments), since i have an already overactive imagination, i don't need to be told that i need to have more imagination.

Back to my original point, asking someone else is not the easy way out, it's the better way of doing things..

why do we have schools? fuck the students, tell em to get the book and learn it their fucking selves. IT'S THE BETTER WAY, NO NEED TO BUG OTHERS! THOSE LAZY BITCHES. no. we go to schools and learn from others rather than from in-animate objects called books because it is a much better approach to learn, from other people. it's faster, and it replies back to you when you have a question that the book does not answer.

If 90% of ravewave doesn't know how to install HSE, i would not be surpised in the least, but i certainly wouldn't blame them.. not everyone is a computer junkie like you or i. just because you feel the need to know everything about computers doesn't mean everyone else should also have that passion. They can be ignorant to whatever they want, you getting mad about it serves nothing.

See, you say this because your vocabulary isn't high enough to understand most good books. I'm sure the vocabulary in 1984 flew right over your head. I mean, "Movies have so much more than a book ever would". C'mon, why make yourself look dumb? Movies have music and special effects to MAKE UP for the lack of descriptiveness and mentality that only the written word can provide.

Oh yes, pardon me, my english is totally lacking and i am completely incompetent in the english arts.

Though when i see sentances like:

"your vocabulary isn't high enough to understand most good books"

it does kinda make me scratch my head and think..

"how high should my vocabulary go?"

at least i can form cogent ideas and relay them properly using the so very difficult to master english language. even with it's very big words that fly right over my head.
