Cubase SX Workshops at the
Ontario College of Art and Design

The Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) is now offering Cubase SX workshops for the general public with discounts for students and alumni.

What's it all about?
This Cubase SX workshop will be starting Saturday, October 25th. The workshop will be spread out across 3 consecutive Saturdays (Oct. 25th, Nov.1st, Nov.8th), and each session will be 6 hours long. These sessions will be a mix of instructor demonstrations and actual hands on learning. Workshop enrollees are invited to utilize a multi-station computer lab at OCAD, where they may work on Cubase SX not only during the scheduled workshop hours, but also during week days and evenings as well. Workshop attendees will need to consult with OCAD scheduling for available computer lab times. [ www.ocad.ca ]

Who should attend?
Songwriters, digital recording engineers, music and media producers, multimedia artists, and anyone looking to acquire a robust and complete knowledge of Cubase SX should attend. This workshop will start with the basics, but with 18 hours of qualified instruction, and individual lab-time access spread over 3 weeks, there will be ample time and resources for each workshop attendee to maximize their individual learning potential.

Workshop Content Overview

First session:
Adding up to a total of 18 hours of Cubase SX instruction, the workshop will begin with MIDI sequencing and editing. Students will learn techniques for composing and arranging music with VST instruments, and hardware synthesizers. Concepts such as quantizing, step recording, automation, etc, will be explained and the technical lingo of sound cards, MIDI interfaces, and other computer parts will be demystified. This part of the workshop will appeal to songwriters.

Second session:
Moving into audio recording and editing, students will learn the fundamentals of audio engineering i.e. connecting microphones and line-level instruments for hard disk multi-track recording. Students will import various .wav files, .rex files, and drum loops into Cubase SX projects and combine these previously recorded files with newly recorded audio material and MIDI instrument sequences. Mixing techniques, cut/paste, effects, time stretching, pitch shifting, etc, will be covered. The plethora of tools in the audio domain will appeal to songwriters, recording engineers, music producers, and DJ/Track producers.

Third session:
Now, with a solid understanding of the MIDI and audio elements of Cubase SX, students will use their acquired knowledge to add sound design and original music to videos. Cubase SX is an excellent tool for composing music for film and by the end of the Cubase SX workshop, students will be synchronizing sound and picture. Video content will be provided, but workshop attendees who possess their own original video files will be encouraged to bring them in. This third session reveals the power of Cubase SX as a media production tool.

More information:
Cubase SX has numerous advanced features for file management; shortcuts; music notation; time-stretching/pitch-shifting algorithms; multiple effect processors; and many other specialty tasks. Workshop attendees will have a range of expectations about what they wish to learn and there will be time for individual instruction throughout the 18 hours workshop. The previous description serves as a basic map of instruction. Call Shawn Dalton at Steinberg Canada for a more detailed discussion of course content.
