Dieselboy bio

Once the underground's best kept secret, drum 'n' bass has crept into mainstream consciousness. A sub-genre that traditionally held second-class status in the rave music scene, the style also known as jungle now seems ubiquitous -- in TV and radio ads, background music, even in the works of some prominent artists. As Roni Size, from the drum 'n' bass hotbed of Bristol, England, recently told Rolling Stone: "Drum 'n' bass is on fire right now."

In the United States, the foundation for this surge in popularity was painstakingly laid with the dedication and sweat of the music's earliest Stateside proponents, among them Dieselboy, aka Damian Higgins, 28.

DJ Dieselboy, dubbed "America's finest" by The Risky, owner/editor of the British Drum 'n' Bass Arena Web site, has earned respect for fighting on the front lines of this American subcultural revolution since the early '90s, playing every major city and many in-between, and for his surgically precise and devastatingly dramatic mixing skills. In 1998, Dieselboy became the first American nominated for a Global DJ Mix Award. Damian shared the award for Best Drum 'n' Bass DJ with legendary British DJ/producer LTJ Bukem. AK1200, aka Dave Minner, the longest running jungle DJ/producer in the U.S., has called Dieselboy "an icon for American junglists. His talent and likeness have made him the most popular jungle DJ in America."

"The 6ixth Session," Dieselboy's sixth commercial CD release, is his first on Palm Pictures and his first double CD-set. The first disc is a mix-CD compilation of tracks by cutting edge drum 'n' bass artists, and includes his original introduction and remixes of two of his own tracks, "The Descent" and "Invid." In his words, this 15-track stream "starts off very MEGA and ends on a nice uplifting vocal note. It sorta goes EPIC HARD to ROLLERS to INTENSE to VOCAL / DEEP. Nice flow." It was mixed live in one take at his home studio in Philadelphia in the wee hours of a Sunday morning in early August. The second disc contains all original tracks.

A Pittsburgh native, Damian played drums in his school band from 4th through 8th grades. He became a breakdancer in junior high, learning moves from watching "Soul Train" and going to clubs. "All of that added up to my having a good sense of rhythm and beats, being able to count music and hear musical time," he says. In his senior year of high school, he DJed a few dances fading between CDs, cassettes and one turntable.

Capital J bio

Capital J, born Jason Raymond Bunsie, has become the fastest rising jungle DJ in the history of the legendary Toronto scene. As a member of one of London Ontario's most musical families, he performed with his brothers as hip hop combo, The Brotherman Posse. Jason, who grew up listening to masters like LL Cool J, Run DMC and Grandmaster Flash, was the DJ in the family.

His relationship with the decks began at a very young age. At fourteen he entered London's foremost scratch contests, where he remained undefeated for five years straight. While still in his teens, J started looping beats and plunking keys in his brothers' studio, having been inspired by the burgeoning house scene. At sixteen he produced and mixed his first E.P., which quickly sold out its 200-unit run and led to support gigs for John Acquaviva, Carl Craig and Juan Atkins.

J's other forays into music making included membership in the hardcore hip hop/rock group, Genocide, which released one album with MCA records and toured across Canada. Also, he was one half of The Incredible Melting Man, a live action breaks crew that was signed to Dust2Dust Records in the UK . Their first single, Funky Plaid Coat reached #13 in the DJ Magazine chart and won them headlining concert slots alongside The Crystal Method and Fat Boy Slim. After two more single releases, J took the initiative and followed his heart into the realm of D&B.

When he decided to move to Toronto, he instantly took its clubs by storm...scratching records with his elbows, feet and chin. Within two months he was named DJ of the month in TRIBE magazine, and followed this up by releasing the city's top selling mix tape. Alongside his MC, Trigger, he currently headlines Toronto's Next Junction parties as well as venues all across North America. If you're especially lucky you might catch him in one of the now legendary back 2 back sets with dj SPINZ.

Over the last six years Capital J has been sharpening up his jungle production skills to match his chart topping Dust2Dust success. His first 12" release, on London's Phobic Records, sold 1000 units in less than two weeks. Its not surprising that his follow up "Paranoid Chronic" was so well received by the UK's Knowledge Magazine. Keep a look out for upcoming hit tunes on Wikkid Records (Montreal), Phobic Records (London) Blaydrunner (Toronto), and of course...Dust2Dust. With such a prolific portfolio already behind him, you can trust that his future releases will only help spread Capital J's wikkid vibe far and wide.

Sase One bio

Sase one has been playing records since 95 and grew up being influenced by people like Tiga, Gnat & Double A & Twist to name a few. Up to that point Sase had been performing with various bands as a singer & guitarist gracing the legendary stage of Foufounes Electric at the young age of 16. A natural performer, Sase One explodes behind the decks with the energy of an all out rock show. Having held down many residencies including the legendary Angels, Levels & Broken @ Blue dog as well as his new night at Saphir with Corey K, Krinjah & MC Element. His selection has made him a household name in the north American D&B/breaks scene.

URB Magazine says of Sase: "Skills so sharp they should be registered as a lethal wepon.". Brand new dubs and the best upfront tunes with a heavy Hip-Hop & R&B influence. Like Sase says, "If the girls aren't dancing, I haven't done my job".

Sase one AKA The General is the founding father of two of Montreal's top crews, The Hardsteppers (Drum & bass collective) & Broken (his outlet for breaks & funky house vibes). Each has respective Labels & Weekly events. At 27 Sase one is on top of his game with tons of new events, record releases & new mix CDs. Holding it down at DNA records (with Corey K & Jordan Dare) & Archanbault as well as a street rep job with Virgin (EMI). This year all eyes are on SASE.

Mindset bio

The Mindset has been active in Montreal's jungle scene for over 5 years, throwing fullscale events for over 3 years under the monicker of n.i.c.e. productions; a name that has come to represent a philosophy of introducing jungle to the uninitiated, often by having two rooms (techno/trance vs jungle/breaks).

Developping his skills for over a year now, The Mindset has moved towards the "progressive jungle" steez while developping a quickcut scratch technique. The Mindset's goal? To win over Montreal's electronic music scene to the sounds of bass n drums.
