the problem with moombathon is the name is wack,

its like all these kids going around using terms like "brostep" (wack), "post dubstep" (give me a fucking break), "juke" (now what the fuck is that), drum step (dumb), liquid funk (come on...)

and my personal favorite "nu skool breaks" like anything stays "nu skool" for more than a week

At the end of the day I find all these needless subcategorizations quite annoying and quite limiting

aw... i like liquid funk... it's such a cool name! although I really don't see how liquid funk relates to funk in any way (apart from the use of amen break?)

but yeah... I've been hearing a whole bunch of pretty retarded names for styles in the past couple of years... aquacrunk, goombawave, trap house, wonky, niche, future garage, post dubstep and more recently post house...

I've heard people refer some form of wobbly electro house as bassline house when a bunch of producers in the UK had been using that name for weird cheesy speed garage for years...

hard techno... sounds nothing like hardtek...

I don't get it... do people not put ten seconds of thought before coming up with these names? having genres and labels can be useful to find stuff you like but at this point, you need a friggin phd in linguistics before you can start figuring out what's what...

Liquid Funk sometimes has a bit of a funky feel to it I find.. at least some funk-like melodies or synths/hamond organs.. I find Liquid Funk fits the style of the music a lot more than Neurofunk..

Imagine being a translator...

"Heh oui, on va jouer du "funk liquide", il y aura aussi du "tambour et de la basse" et Skrillex sera la pour jouer pour les "freres qui marchent", un style aussi connu sous le nom de brostep.

it's sort of stupid to talk in terms of 'names' of styles, much better to talk in terms of artists that you like...

Well broad definitions of genres are useful, but when you start making up a million names its just annoying.

Electronic music can largely be divided into 2 main groups.

You have your *boom boom boom* group where the beat relys on a constant 4 X 4 that is trance, house, techno, gabber tec...

Then you have the whole family of "breakbeat" oriented music, that is to say styles that rely on broken beats, in there you have drum n bass, breaks, dubstep, trip hop, glitch music, idm and any other style of music that relies on broken beats, the only thing that varies is the tempo.

A slow breakbeat at 90 bpm would be a trip hop, a glitch beat or just a straight up instrumental hip hop

A breakbeat at 120 bpm (which is roughly the speed most breaks djs play at) would be your tradionnal breaks music

A breakbeat played at 130 bpm would be your average dubstep beat

A breakbeat sped up to 160 bpm would be your drum n bass beat

Now of course these are rough definitions and obviously each genre has its own unique characteristics and Im sure some purists will disagree with my oversimplification but thats the way I interpret it.

One of the things Im known for and that I've always enjoyed doing as dj is playing sets where the bpm is always getting slightly faster. I really like the idea of having a unified diversity in my sets. If planned right you can actually do an hour set where you cover all those styles without missing a beat. I cant stand "djs" who play one style all night, it bores the shit out of me.

This video will give you an idea of what one "breakbeat" sounds like at different speeds

Yeah Bassnectar explains it pretty well, although I would have substituted the word "broken beat" and just used the word "breakbeat" instead just because all these styles rely on breakbeats as their backbone

"Broken beat" actually refers to a short lived UK style of breakbeats.
[ en.wikipedia.org ]

But I understand he probably did it so as not to confuse people. Its important to understand there is the "breakbeat" genre which is around 120 - 140 bpm which is pretty much a style in itself and then you have beats thats are "breakbeats" by the nature of the way the beat is constructed.

Some people get really offended when I suggest that what they play is "breakbeats" because they automatically assume Im lumping their music in with the breakbeat genre. Im not, what Im saying is all these genres of music use breakbeats as their underpinnings.

For posterity:

sorry dude, but you'll have to add 10 bpm to each of those ;)
(and d'n'b varies from 170 to 180)

Those ^ two tempos are reserved for 4/4 -- 130 = house & 160 = Gabber

:]

and you forgot, bump the breakbeat to 190 / 200 bpm, and you get Breakcore ;)

As for the original virginal subject, i'll go into the music laboratory and create a new style for ya' : Neo-Oldschool Steppin'-Trance-Dub (aka. NO-STD)
I'm feeling you up right now..
