well, I'm not sure I would necessarily ask for a diploma if I were to hire for that kind of job... but I don't think your colleagues have one either :P

anyways, they still know their stuff better than italmelodie...

I only talk from my own experience in those shops... also, mostly about drum-related stuff. My feeling about Italmelodie is that they have a few top products that they want you to buy anyway, with almost no knowledge about other products and no desire to understand what the clients needs/wants. For Steve's it's still not great, but quite better.
I've been going to both places for a few years and mostly for drums, as I said, and I've been disappointed most of the times I went there (although a lot more at Italmelodie).

PS: If anybody knows another drum shop in Montreal (excepted Drum Bazar), I'd be glad to try it :)

I think for the most part when shopping in different stores, it really comes down to what kind of client you are and who is on staff that day. Of course each store has their own flavor but you can't expect everyone to know everything about every item in a store as complex as a full fledged music store with over 10 departments and 80 employees. Typically, every employee is there for a specific reason and skill set above others and hopefully has enough of a life to not be there 24 hours a day 7 days a week for your utter brain raping pleasure. The more prepared you come and the more willing you are to participate in a learning process that goes both ways, the better you'll perceive the service.

No offence Flo but last time I saw you at Italmelodie you were looking for "un treigue" in the keyboard department with zero product information and could hardly describe what it was or what it did without using broken sentences and equally as cryptic terms and kind of huffed off upon contemplating my lack of telepathic ability. Realistically, no one could have helped you that day unless maybe they came from your home planet. I would have spent all afternoon with you if I had to, infact I was really happy to see a fellow ravewaver at Ital.

anyways my point is.. be as good of a client as you expect to be served and there's rarely an issue.
I'm feeling soma right now..

lol sorry but I didn't know it was you until I talked to you on raveware a few days after... I was sent to you from the drum department and I was asking for a very common thing, a "drum brain" aka "drum module" aka "sound module with trigger inputs"... I even mentioned to you the JomoX, which apparently sounded totally alien to you, and then two days after you offer to sell me one on ravewave because you had one... I'm sorry that you can't understand the simplest things your clients ask of you. If terms like "samples", "triggers", "sound bank" and "module" are cyptic for you, maybe there's a problem with your choice of a job. I don't mean to be an asshole but I was pretty impressed by the total absence of service that day (not only by you). I got a pretty good service using the same "broken sentences" at Moog for that matter... maybe they were from the same planet as me.
The only time I got good service from Italmelodie was from a young girl in the first department you see when you enter the shop; I also once got somehow good advice from a guy about microphones and cables, but with a jaded bored frown (and I generally tend to cheer people up, not the opposite).

PS: When you're a salesman, you're supposed to be nice in the first place... even if the client looks unsympathetic to you. You might get bored or angry as the discussion goes, but at least, start with smile and motivation to understand and help the client. Maybe requiring tips would help?
I don't think I came upon you as unfriendly and bitchy whatsoever...

Looks like I just sounded pretty mean... sorry for that. Also, by "tips" I meant "pourboires", not "advices" (in case that wasn't clear enough).
I'm feeling the flow right now..
