but does anyone remember this little book when they were a kid. it's set in Paris France - and I'm pretty sure it was written by a French person - though my copy was in English. every page of the book is illustrated with photographs of what is happening
it's about some poor kid who grows up in kind of a rough neighbourhood in Paris and he is either lost or he is a street kid and doesn't really have any friends so he find this red balloon that has a sort of personality and it befriends him and follows him through the streets floating along. then of course he runs into older mean kids on the street who wind up popping the balloon and killing it or something so he is all sad.. but then all these balloons come out of sky from all over and flock to him.. I think they somehow rough up the bullies who popped the first balloon (lol - don't ask how balloons manage to do this - but I think that's what happened) .. and then he hangs on and all the balloons carry him away high above the city anyway.. kinda random I know.. I just remember reading it when i was a little kid..like when I was 5 and thinking it was pretty cool at the time. but I cant for the life of me remember what it was called. anyone else read it? |

ah I found out what it was - it's the book adaptation of this movie.. Le Ballon Rouge.
I got it twisted a bit.. he's not a street kid.. he just had to walk through strange neighbourhoods because the streetcar driver wouldn't let him on with the balloon [ www.imdb.com ] A boy makes friends with a seemingly sentient balloon, and it begins to follow him. It follows the boy to school, to the bus, and to church. Boy and balloon play together in the streets of Paris and try to elude a gang of boys that wants to destroy the balloon. Winner of the Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and there is almost no dialog spoken in the film. |
