Police in Regina say they have been picking up people intoxicated from drinking hand sanitizing liquids which contain alcohol.

They say the problem has cropped up in Regina's downtown and may be connected to accessible sources of sanitizer, such as in shopping centres and the public areas of the General Hospital.

A spokeswoman for police told CBC News that officers believe people have stolen large containers of alcohol-based sanitizers to drink the contents.

"An 800-millilitre size is used only by the health region," Elizabeth Popowich said. "So our officer was in touch with security at the health region to try to develop a way to place an identifier on the container."

Popowich said the goal of labeling containers was to help investigators determine the source.

A spokesman for the Regina-Qu'Appelle Health Region said they will comply, but notes the product is available in many public areas. "You can get sanitizer anywhere," Bill Carney said. "City hall has it. The court house has it. Even the Cornwall Centre [shopping mall] has it."

Carney said concerns about the flu have led to hand sanitizers popping up everywhere.

"Since the pandemic last year, everyone's more conscious of hand-washing," Carney said. "So we don't even know if it comes from us or from somewhere else."

Carney said if it turns out that stolen alcohol-based sanitizers are traced to the health region, security will be increased.

"If in fact the people continue to get picked up by police and [the sanitizer] comes from a certain ward or certain facility, then we can take some action to stop the theft," he said.

doesn't it contain the same alcohol found in moonshine, the one that can make you go blind? or is it the "right" one, approved by liquor boards?

Hand sanitizers commonly have ethanol (the kind of alcohol that you buy at the SAQ) and/or isopropanol (not something you'd want to drink).

The alcohol that blinds people is methanol.

I've never even heard of IM/IV ethanol use... but I guess it could make sense, if you really don't like the taste but still want to get drunk.

Strait to the brain... they've probably been doing it for years in Moscow. I think it was host_one that started a thread about kids in Russia that injected anti-depressants and started to loose limbs, their flesh would literally fall off. Definitely one of the worst vid's i have ever seen.

[ www.dailymotion.com ] this Tianeptine drug users video ? I remember that. warning: not for squeamish.

lemme wiki this shiite

Tianeptine (under "Coaxil" brand name) has been intravenously injected by drug users in Armenia and Russia. This method of administration reportedly causes an opioid-like effect and is sometimes used in an attempt to lessen opioid withdrawal symptoms. As tianeptine tablets do not fully dissolve and often the solution is not filtered well, particles in the injected fluid can block small blood vessels, leading to thrombosis and then severe necrosis.

Oh yeah, I'd heard about that. It's not the drug that causes the thrombosis and necrosis; it's the fact that these people were injecting pills (fillers and all) into their bloodstream. BAD BAD IDEA.
