RAIDS NET 59 KILOS OF MARIJUANA

Pot 'Compassion Centres'; $10,000 In Cash And 35 Suspects

A Lachine medical-marijuana-distribution shop - which raised eyebrows
by openly operating for months within eyesight of that borough's
police station - has been put authoritatively out of business.

A sweeping police crackdown Thursday shut all four such "compassion
centres" operating on Montreal Island.

More than 80 officers equipped with search warrants were deployed to a
total of nine locations, five of them private homes of suspects
involved in the retail outlets.

When it was all over, they had rounded up 35 suspects and seized 59
kilograms of pot, a small quantity of hashish and about $10,000 in
cash.

"There were days when we observed more than 200 people going in and
out" of the Culture 420 Compassion Club in Lachine, on 15th Ave. near
the corner of Notre Dame St. W., Commander Antonio Iannantuoni said.

The clampdown simultaneously shut two other medical-pot shops in
Plateau Mont Royal borough, and a fourth on Papineau Ave. in the east
end. It was conducted in co-ordination with a raid that closed a
compassion centre in Quebec City.

All had been selling pot, openly and in significant quantities, to
walk-in clients who said they needed the drug for medical reasons.

One person with an easily obtained notarized attestation of medical
need, without such proof as a doctor's certificate, was all that was
needed for groups of three or four people to load up at the Lachine
outlet, nearby residents said.

To his knowledge, Iannantuoni said, all medical-pot points of sale in
Quebec have been shut.

Most clients of the Lachine shop were under the age of 35, Iannantuoni
said, citing reports filed by his investigators.

Neighbours agreed that the vast majority of the pot shop's clientele
appeared young and healthy. They scoffed at any suggestion each pot
buyer could have a medical condition that would be alleviated with
marijuana consumption.

About five kilograms of pot was seized in the Lachine shop,
Iannantuoni added. Eleven people were arrested.

Among the arrested was Marc-Boris St-Maurice, founding leader of the
Bloc Pot and the Marijuana Party of Canada. He is also founder and
president of the Montreal Compassion Club.

The outlet's website listed an eye-opening pre-bust "daily menu"
offering a dozen varieties of pot, like Crack Berry, Cherry Bombs and
Blue Haze. All but one strain were listed for $12 a gram, or seven
grams for $60.

Montreal police have decreed "zero tolerance" for the sale of pot,
Iannantuoni said, and are telling people with a legitimate medical
need for the drug to contact Health Canada.

Use and cultivation of marijuana for certain medical conditions has
been legal under Canadian law since 2001.

"But it is illegal to sell it," Iannantuoni said.

The suspects will face charges of trafficking and conspiracy, he
added.

Unless suspects have outstanding arrest warrants, he said, all will
probably be released on conditions that would include renunciation of
any marijuana selling, coupled with a promise to appear in court.

The police probe revealed no links between the clubs and organized
crime, street gangs or motorcycle gangs, said Iannantuoni. He heads
the youth, morality and drug squad for the western part of Montreal
Island. He specified that only suspects involved in the distribution
were arrested.

Pot consumption is said to help relieve pain and provide other
benefits for cancer patients, people with brain injuries and others.

One man on the scene - interviewed between calls on his cellphone -
said he was a regular client, and expressed distress at the turn of
events, although not for any medical reason.

"I'm healthy - I just like to smoke the stuff," he said, asking that
only his first name, Philippe, be published.

Philippe said he would regularly pick up his supply at the pot shop,
accompanied by his brother, who has a notarized, sworn
attestation.

Customers could also pick up what Philippe called "edibles" -
brownies, cookies and banana bread laced with pot, most priced at $7
apiece, according to the pot shop's Internet menu.

"It was just like going into any drug dealer's place," he said. "My
favourite was the Mango Kuss."

Where were all those different and rather exotic-sounding breeds of
pot grown?

"I don't ask where they get their stuff," Philippe
replied.

Iannantuoni said none of the raids came across any marijuana grow ops.

Yeah and at 40$ for a 3.5 some people were getting ripped off... Someone was making a lot of money that's for sure, especially since the stuff does not cost much to grow... It's a weed after all, weeds just want to grow everywhere.

These places are a ripoff, operating on their own laws. I guess their "strong" weed made them a little delusional. Forgot they we're operating illegaly lol

Am i the only one to find it a bit extreme that one day everything was fine and the compassion club was doing business and that then, boom, no warnings or anything, arrests and so on and so forth?!

Why didnt they ( the law enforcement )just made it clear that it had to be shut down, then work with the people involved to do so instead of going all out, cracking down on them cowboy style. lol
I'm feeling like a space shuttle right now..

bof, I think it was up to them to figure out that they weren't operating with licenses, they dont exist here. The government dispenses their own strain of weed to patients, the CCC are the "cowboys" if anything. Since when is it legal to sell weed from a store front? Anywhere other than Holland?
Everywhere else pot clubs are still illegal. So they're stupid for thinking they we're above everyone,
including the law.

because then it's not as dramatic and won't make the news.. this way, it'll be on TV, the cops can put on a show and the people who are all "OMG DRUGS ARE BAD WILL SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN???" can feel that the police is actually doing something actively to combat dangerous criminals.. a RAID sounds more like hardcore action taken against dangerous people than just telling them to shut down or they'll get arrested.

Meanwhile, the bikers making/selling pills and that are into hardcore shit like murder, extortion, etc.. are all running around free (because let's face it, going after DANGEROUS criminals is, well, DANGEROUS! A bunch of hippies in a store is a lot safer! We can't have cops risking their lives to save the lives of people now, can we?) and they're going to be getting all this influx of new clientel... and they can charge even more money for their product!
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

It would make sens. What is the '' CCC '' ? I dont know the whole legal context. But wasnt it kind

of legal or something? I always tought there were a bunch of laws allowing compassion clubs to

exists? Do you mean they just were offering the service regardless of the legal aspect of it? If so

they asked for what just fell on their heads lol

You are allowed to grow weed for up to 2 people who have a permit to smoke it... Instead of having the government grow it for you, you can choose someone to grow it for you... But you can only grow for 2 people and the amount depends on who you are growing it for.

Compassion clubs were over abusing... Growing for more then the 2 allowed people (it used to be 1 but the doubled it to 2). Basically this will leave room for more business to thrive growing weed. Just you can't make money off it. But anyone can grow for anyone if the right permits are had.

My experience with pot is that it makes you lazy... That's about it... I don't see why some people have the right to be lazy and other people do not...

Got it lol

Then it was bound to happen. It sucks tough, i was planning on getting a proof of diagnosis for some random things from my doctor and then have access to AA labeled weed. Even if you dont smoke the stuff it's too cool of a concept to not have acess to it lol

Haha weed dosent make everyone lazy! I mean, some people, im one of them, are so lazy from the start that nothing can worsen the situation xD! I ended up quitting smoking grass because it totally kills all of my ability to be social. Lazyness feels good haha i'd love more of it, being a social veggie isnt fun lol

the prices and rules had changed since i was there in 99

they were no membership card and the prices were incredible... varying from 5$/g to 8$/g depending on the loom..

i never saw no one back then becoming rich i think we were doing that to help sick people and also make a political point..

majority of my clients there were having terminal cancer or aids... you needed an exemption from gov. following a prescription by a doctor.

wow i'm really surprised to ear all that.. back when i was working therei was told to never sell their stuff to people without the gov. paperwork filed and it was a serious thing.

we were operating in front of the cops station on rachel and mentana.. sometimes they were parking their car in front of the shop and filmed us but i suppose with the conditions of some of the patients they lived us alone...

i actually started to volunteer there following the bust on the local of the bloc pot..

i can't believe they started to sell to everybody//

Pot is less dangerous than alcohol and should be legal.

The cops wasted our tax dollars on this raid and I don't feel I should support actions like this that use my tax dollars (which are INSANELY HIGH in Quebec) for this kind of BS.
