here's the complete transcript of Steve Lalls' interview with world's no. 5 DJ Armin Van Buuren... article appears in April 17 edition of the Hour... [ www.hour.ca ] big up the Hour. (** indicates Steve's questions, comments)

**Impressions of Montreal?

It’s a very trendy town, lots of nice clubs, bars and restaurants. Many people I meet from all over the world talk about Montreal as being at the forefront of club culture. It’s not just cause you work for the newspaper there that I say this, it’s something that really struck me. It’s a really healthy scene in Montreal. If you look at the list of people that come there often it’s really impressive; it looks like Montreal is one of the best cities to go to in the world. Let me tell you one thing: the scene in Montreal must be better than it is here in Holland!

**In Holland?

The club scene is dead, the large raves are still happening

**What do you know about bal en blanc?

My manager told me i have to bring white clothes. Hahah. It’s some sort of trademark of mine anyways! But no, i have a clothing sponsor who has a lot of wqhite clothing, and we did a Sensation white party here last here with 45 000 people in a stadium in Amsterdam, that was pretty amazing, two events: one the white edition and one the balck. It can be very special when everyone is playing white. I heard bal en blanc is in a stadium, it’s really special and a once in a life opportunity.

**You’re on a tour?

It;’s Toronto on Thursday, government, Friday is Vancouver, at Simple Fix, plaza of the nations, and Sunday Bal en Blanc.

**Would you call your music ‘trance’?

I would call it dance music and i;’ll tell you why. For you to call it trance is fine. I dont want to cause the word has a bad name, and on the other hand I play a style of music that was totally different six years ago. Back in the beginning of the 90’s it was house music, and then it was called goa, and then hardcore, and now trance all of a sudden. I have a lot of discussions with people that say trance, or progressive. I dont think trance is a dirty word. It’s very difficult to answer these questions about what style you’re playing. The trance genre is so big, you have the popular, commercial trance whatever is high in the charts, which is definitely not what i’m playing and they give trance a bad name. And i respect those people, it’s just NOT trance. There is a music called trance back in 98 a small amount of records. We could go on about this for hours and hours.

**Do you use turntables? CDs? Final Scratch? And stuff.

Unfortunately yes... Nothing will beat the sound of vinyl, even if the actual frequency response of CDs is better, there’s something about vinyl that cannot be duplicated, maybe that’s just something personal. But with the music business nowadays, you have to play CDs. A lot of producers send me their productions directly, on CDR and I used to traverl with one or two CDs now I bring a whole case. I hate it but it’s inevitable if you wanna hear the newest productions. Unfortunately, it’s inevitable. I use a lot of CDs, make special edits, that’s a good thing, you can be creative. Final Scartch is Not the real thing foer me, its far too complicated. Its a ncie system, very intelligent, but it’s a big hassle to actually get it going, and its just not stable enough. It’s mostly about the tracks, putting the records on that will give you that nice stadium feeling. But I don’t play techno. I play more melodic music

I’m really looking forward to the gig, and i will do my best to be prepared. I’m still really bad in french...

**Don’t worry it’s a very bilingual city.

**What about upcoming projects?

Ya, that’s quite a big story actually. The 3rd of June i release my first artist album, on United Recordings’ Armind label, and I’ve started my own record company as well, but that’s something for the future. Armind is managed by me, but was handled and marketed by United, and that’s what I will do on my own now. I’m really proud of the album, I’ve worked for a year on it. The first single has been signed to over 10 countries, a collaboration with former Genesis singer Ray Wilson, anf there’s a huge amoun tof vocal tracks and some non vocal tracks on it also. A bit of a pop album but also very trancey. It comes out in the first place on CD and then vinyl releaes, extended versions and stuff like that. My own label will be called Armada, we’re just setting it up, I can’t really tell too much about. It. I’ve been focussing on this album, and I’m doing that with Armind and United so...

I really enjoyed myself in Israel, i also had a fantastic tiem last tnime i was in canada, at aria and ath the guvernment, it was really amazing, terrific crowds, i will never forget that. Also had a really good time in Autstalia.

There was never a plan, i never started and said ‘I want to to be number one’. It’s something i love to do, and the crowds have gotteen bigger but i hope i dont change. It’s more than just liking music, it’s really a passion, and it’s a big honor if people come to listen to you. And I think it’s a big responsibility: that’s why I think i got so far, by taking people seriously who have paid to come out for a party. They’ve worked all week and spend their money to come out so i try, even though i can’t please everyone, i try to make everyone happy. People look forward to going out and enjoying themselves, and that’s what i try to do for them.

yup. though the hour has ownership of the actual story as it was written, they have no right to this material; it's obviously different material.
