Do you think people who make threads should be allowed to ban other people from posting in their thread?

I vote: No.

I think it's a good thing... An option to not show any threads started by a certain person can work also... Instead of just messages... The ban thing helps to keep threads clean since some people have trouble ignoring people...

How are you going to do negative inclusion in mysql? Indexes don't work with "NOT IN(...)"..

he could use a FULL OUTER JOIN on a Derived table
Update » DynV wrote on Tue Jun 2, 2009 @ 6:56pm
how about limiting the ban limit to what's necessary like 5 ?
Update » DynV wrote on Tue Jun 2, 2009 @ 6:59pm
sorry meant CROSS JOIN

That could work. Set a limit. I like.

Usually only a handful of people are the problem, not 12.

Outer joins are brutally slow in mysql, especially on large tables that get queried and updated frequently.

I think outer joins are less slow the using NOT IN... I changed a lot of my queries last year to use them... but they are still slow as you can see from loading your messages... If i got rid of banner or just minimized instead of hiding, things would be way way faster... I might have to do it soon as I notice my messages are being displayed stupidly slow...

I'd love to have access to such a site to benchmark it once in a while. :)

i think [ [ rave.ca ] ] should just have a sticky thread where if you click on it, you automatically get axed from posting in that thread, all the while, you simultaneously get banned for a couple of days (redirected to disney.fu or whatefer)...

that way, any time you start to think you're gona fuck up and lose your shit online here, you just click on the thread, become a hero and fix everything

honk honk
Update » PonChalice wrote on Tue Jun 2, 2009 @ 7:40pm
like "Banning Option: Guidelines (Read Before Posting)" thread, only more advanced
Update » PonChalice wrote on Tue Jun 2, 2009 @ 7:52pm
... wait, in retrospect:

it might work better if the "auto-ban thread" automatically banned every one as soon as anyone clicked on the link... kind of like a nuclear holocaust. that way, since everyone knows if you fuck about... some one might push the "red button" and everyone is banned for a couple days !?!?

i dont know, my douay centanimos, as they say
I'm feeling the re-lol right now..

i think its a good option.
however,i always believe in free-speach,
sometimes threads get out of hand and banning tends to keep it like how noah sayd "clean".
only ban when its nessasry.
and people shouldint get too ofended or start new fights because they got banned.
really....its only cyber space.
I'm feeling up your mom right now..
