I'm working on some hard dubstep, and i need know if i'm headed in a good direction...

I don't listen to a ton of dubstep, but i like it & am looking to make a side-project out of it, so i'd like to know what the dubstep community (and everyone else of course) thinks of this...

Production notes are welcome, but i'm looking more for opinions on style. Constructive criticism preferred, but i can deal with harsh honesty too :)

here's the first track: [ www.rave.ca ]

(ps. volume might be a little low compared to normal tracks)

thnx!

It sounds alright, just really some level fixings.. The thing mainly is that I find it doesn't emphasize the bass all that much, more the drums.. Dubstep tends to be mostly about the bass and having a twisted bassline that makes you think "How the FUCK did he do that?!"

I can't find a youtube clip of it, but there's a tune called Call Me Mr. Cold Blooded by King Cannibal.. give that a listen if you can find it, that's some of the hardest dubstep I've ever heard so far hehe

here's another good example..

holy fuck! nice examples, thnx...

yeah, it took all my willpower to take the drums down...i'll take 'em down a bit more and add to the bassline. i was wondering if the distorted kick works along side dubstep...i think it does, but it's hard to emphasize that type of kick with the massive bass strung along.

i also kept the bassline clean, afraid of making the whole thing too dirty...maybe a bit of drive on it would help...

what's wrong in the levels? not enough bass, not enough highs? which instruments are too loud or not loud enough? besides too much emphasis on the kicks, of course :p

thnx Fred, very inspiring...i'll keep working at it.

btw, this was produced with headphones, and checked with "normal" speakers...

well I found that the emphasis was too much on the drums and that they drowned everything else out a little.. The rest of the sounds are good and sound really clean, but the drums overpower them a little I find..

A bit of drive on the bass could be good.. Try a filter or two also, maybe a pre and post drive filter, just to mess around with things.. I haven't used the Fruity Formula, but if I remember what it does right, you can set it up to modify parameters like filters based off of parameters of other things/effects.. Like if filter 1 is up to max frequency, filter 2 is low in width but high in speed, and as you lower the freq. of filter 1, it would increase the width and slow down the speed of filter 2, etc..

i'd just say, keep it simple, hard to explain what i mean really, but like, work on a simple swingy kind of drum pattern, with really big harsh snares, since they dont come in as often as a normal tune. and work on getting a really filthy bassline, the melody doesn't have to fluctuate much, but the behavior of it should, like pitch bending octaves higher and lower, and maybe sum LFO filter rate type of stuff for the wobbling....

if you do decide to keep a bunch of different sounds going on at the same time, maybe just take a note from each, and let each one play by itself for a second each or wtv in the pattern...

sorry if i'm getting a lil confusing in my response, but all in all i'd say keep it simple, but each sound that does come through, make it fucking huge and nasty as possible...and if you do use lots of different synths and samples, let each one breath by itself, or have them all play in the same kind of pattern, but on different frequencies n whatnot, so they all work together nicely...

general response, but it relates to what i heard in your mix, without being too direct hehe...

make your track super mono, the example that fred listed sounds so hard cause it is center channel 90% of the time. Bass wants to be like that. You could always use a high pass filter and have an aux effect like a chorus from the baseline simultaneously (make sure you filter the bass out of the affected version). Use dry kicks at the same time as distorted ones. Use very little reverb, especially on the drums (only use it for some atmospheric effects). Keep it simple like other people wrote. If you follow that and use good compressors and distortion sparingly (but in the right places) you can get that "big" sound.

ha...that's funny because that's exactly how i see my my kicks. i didn't even occur to me to apply that to the bassline here. it just sounded cool with the stereo effect :P ...but it gives me a great idea!

thanks for all the feedback & tips! it'll really help...

i'm tying to apply to my own style to dubstep, while trying to recreate/understand the essence of it.

i'll finish re-working it and upload the next version...

cheers! :)

Also take in mind that dubstep is a genre that pays a lot of respect to vinyl.
and vinyl has limitations...
and stereo signals below a certain frequency are one of those limitations.
so if you got a really low bassline on 2 channels, when it's cut to vinyl the groove becomes too wide for the cutterhead.
I think the common rule is that anything below 200-300hz should be mono.

Nice tune! If you want some advice less is more. Drop out the bassline sometimes so it can have more impact when it comes in. Keep em comming... Love the crash and the snare rolls!!

yup, i'm about done the revamped version, applying all of your advices ;)

i fear it'll lose it's original essence though... so i'm working on a new track at the same time, should be light-years ahead of the old one :)

will upload soon

:D

alright, here we go, after a few trial & error runs, a decent product.

the song is not at all finished (only 2 minutes so far, and some of that needs work), and the transition into the vocal sample is fucked, but i'm working on that..

so far your opinions have been a great help, keep lettin' me know what ya' think! :)

nice work on the the bass sound, nice and gritty...
the drums however im not really feeling, that snare needs to be louder, harsher, and wet!(like the sound of a big black cock, slapping a big black ass)

good work tho man, keep at it...

thnx..

yeah, i'm not 100% sure about the kicks either... i wanted something that wouldn't interfere with the rest, just nice and punchy. i think i'll change them up though... unless you meant the drum patterns?

i'll re-adjust the snare too.
