I recently got the KRK Rokit 6SE and they sound fucking great! They were about 380$+tax for the pair.. You're probably gonna want a sub also to go with them (they only go down to 53hz I think) and KRK makes a sub that's also about the same price..

Just to give you an idea, whenever I go to bed I need to have music on to sleep, so I've got this discography of a german band called Boheren and Der Club of Gore.. I've literally been listening to their discography every night for about a year and a half..

first time I put it on when I got the Rokit 6 I was hearing instruments and melodies that I didn't even know were in the recording.. It's like there were two band-members that I never even heard the whole time I'd been listening to their music..
I'm feeling your norks right now..

I'm using the Mackie HR824s. Very solid monitors, only thing is that the mids are a tiny bit aggressive and that the stereo image is so large on these that initially they can make you think your song has great stereo depth when it doesn't. But aside from that they were my favorite monitors.

My advice to you would be to go down to italmelodie or someplace with a cd you know extremely well and listen to it on all the different speakers. Find the ones that speak to you. When you play a song you know well and hear something in it you never picked up before, that's a good sign.
I'm feeling wtf charles? right now..

just one thing you have to be aware before you buy monitors, is it for producing/mixing/mastering?

(by mixing i mean doing mixdown, not DJ mixing)

if yes, then i STRONGLY suggest buying HEADPHONES

heres the why.

you room surely isnt acoustically treated, so it is not really worth putting 1000$ uber-flat monitors in a room where you got standing waves (resonant frequencies) all over the place, yes it will sound better than "normal" speaker, but you cant rely on them to do accurate mix, because the room will play against you/them.

my advice would be to invest the same amount in headphones, which you will be able to use for mixing and mastering, without being mislead by the room's acoustics

i personally have alesis M1 active MK2, but i rarely mix and master in them, i do it in my sennheizer hd 25-1 II

standing waves: [ en.wikipedia.org ]

example, one certain frequency will bounce from a wall to another and will apmplify itself if the wavelenght is in relation of the distance between those said walls.

if your room is 4 meters by 6 meters by 3 meters (relatively big room), considering the speed of sound is 344 m/s
the firsts standing waves will be the one who have 2 times the distance between the walls in wavelenght.

344 / (2*4) = 43 hz
344 / (2*6) = 29 hz
344 / (2*3) = 57 hz

that means, in a 4*6*3 room, 43,29,57 hz are up to 6db louder than other frequencies, and thier harmonics too

43 *2 ...*3 ... *4... *5... *6... ect
43, 86, 129 ect
29 *2... *3... *4... ect
29, 58, 86 ect
57 *2... *3... *4... ect
57, 114, 171

so, in this fictional room, you got 29, 43, 57, 58 (57 + 58, thats bad), 86 (two times, thats really bad) 114, 129, 171 ... and more

these are frequencies that you hear louder than you should, so even if you have referency monitors, its pretty useless because your room isnt flat.

the smaller the room, the worst its get, 6 *4 meters is pretty big for a room in an appartement.

so unless you plan on treating your room, (which should cost you around 20 000$ for a decent job, no, egg cardboards doesnt work), id suggest getting really good referency headphones

For your monitors...

I'd got for the extremes: Either I'd go for a good cheap pair like KRK RP series or ESI Near05 or Yorkville YSM2P OR a fawcking great pair like K & H 0300, O100 or Genelec 1032A or anything from Spendor, DynAudio BM6, etc, etc. From what I experienced, there are very few monitors under 2000$ that worth to be bought because you will always end up in a studio to finish up the work with if you have an "average" pair of speakers at home. My advise would be: take'em speakers for a spin and just go with heart and soul. It's like a pair of shoes. Some fancy shoes will be very uncomfortable for you as you might find a cheap pair of sneakers that perfectly suits your needs.

Just go out and try'em all out, don't be shy to bring your references in terms of music (your fetish CDs, anything with the kinda sound you target) and THEN, re-ajust the budget in consequence. It's not even a matter of specs anymore, it's all about comfort and thruth

there seems to be 4 different pairs at moog... [ www.moogaudio.com ]

i'm guessing the HD 25-1's are the best, followed by the HD 25-SP's from the price...

would any of the two lesser valued ones be good for production and/or better than Sony MDR-V500's? (what i'm using now)

dialect, id suggest you to invest a bit more than 150$, and get the hd 25-1 II, at moog they are around 220 i think.

i had v-700 that my cat broke, and bought them (hd 25-1 II), and i can say im almost happy my cat broke the others because my new ones really rocks, both for studio and djing

meh, gotta disagree a bit with some of the things said here..

saying that there are no speakers worth buying under 2000$+ is exaggerated. you need to make a decision based on your situation.

first : have you been producing music for a while? are you a complete newbie, or a complete pro? or somewhere between that? do you feel your speakers/headphones are stopping you from progressing? if so, buy better speakers.

second : how much cash are you ready to spend. personally i spent 1100$ on my pair of monitors. I'm not super rich but I have been patient, gave myself a lot of time to think, and made the move when the time felt right. (and I am damn satisfied of my purchase!)

third : WHAT DO YOU WANT THEM FOR? honestly, you can make stomping rave choonz with quite cheap speakers. they will even sound good in raves. i know for one that lone star has the crappiest shit in the world and his tracks sound quite good, he's gonna kick major asses when he finally decides to get good speakers. right now he pays about 30$ to get his tracks mastered by a pro when he finishes them,

also of course it costs a lot to get the perfect home studio, and that's why most people start renting a studio when they start making mad cash with music. as long as you're learning/not making cash, better buy cheaper studio stuff, get some experience and really know how much you enjoy producing music, get to know your strengths and all. and it's useless to spend too much if you're pretty new to it... i know enough people who spend a assload of cash in gear and nearly never use it

also about headphones.. they're really not for everyone! personally i do everything with the speakers, and really hate doing anything with the headphones. again that's something you can only figure out for yourself by doing some field work and making some wise investments.

good luck!

sony mdr-7506

They are way better than the crappy DJ model headphones Sony makes for production.

The V6 have the same drivers but different chord and shorter warranty.

I prefer them to other brands such as the sennheisers in that price range.

Beyer Dynamics if you want to spend more.

A lot of sub $500 monitors are decent, I'd try them out and find out the one you like best. None of them are great however, especially in bedrooms.
