I read a good article but I can't find it anymore and it really changed my opinions about the war in Iraq, sort of.

The war in Iraq is for peace, but in a pervese form of it. As most of us know, America believes that their way of life is far superior to anyone else's in the world. So why not force that way of life onto everyone else? If everyone was living under the same political structure, same economic structure, same ideologies, then there would be world peace no?

Of course there would be world peace, since there is only one side, one opinion, and no one to oppose that side or opinion. So the war in Iraq isn't really over oil, it's over this strange belief system that the only way to achieve peace is by americanizing the world. Not necessarily destroying religions and making everyone christian, but making everyone believe in the United States of the World.

Of course, this system is doomed to fail because the US will collapse under its own weight, kinda like how the Roman empire fell...

I'm not saying its right, I'm just saying this is whats going on folks. Americanization of the world, driven by the idea that this will bring world peace...

Also, note some of the members of PNAC:
Dick Cheney - Vice President of the United States
Donald Rumsfeld - Defense Secretary of the United States

This is bad...

What if the USA rebuilds Iraq and profits from the oil, but improves the lives of Iraq's populace substantially? What are we going to do if that happens? Start complaining about something else? What if bush was actually right in going to war on his own initiative and becomes a hero to the people of Iraq? What will we do then?

and what will happen when no "smoking gun" is found in Iraq? The political fallout would be tremendous.

Obviously the lives of the people are going to improve...the US has to make sure of that or else they look pretty bad in the eyes of the world.

Even if we end up as one world, one nation...we'll have to restructure everything so it's not based on money.

I definetly agree with Voidnull that at least part of the motivation for attacking Iraq is the somewhat naive beleif that the American way of life is the best way, and by introducing this way of life to the Iraqis, we will improve their lives.

However, there are many people living under totalitarian regimes just as brutal as in Iraq, and the United States never speaks about this because some of those countries are allied to the US. Examples: Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and others. Basically, the US will only act as a 'liberator of oppressed people' when it is convenient to do so, and when it coincides with other strategic goals.

Furthermore, Iraqis lives will only improve in the best case scenario: a quick, painless transition to democracy. On the other hand, if there is a urban fighting in Baghdad, or the various factions (Kurda, Sunnis, Shiites) end up turning on each other after Saddam is gone, we could end up seeing a prolonged and brutal civil war. If this happens, can we really count on the US to stay and sort things out, even after Saddam is gone?

Finally, the U.S. should learn from Europe's history of colonization that imposing foreign values on a people rarely works. Britian, France, and others probably thought that colonizing Africa, and introducing Christianity to African people, was doing a great service to them. The reality is that people tend to resent foreign rulers trying to impose their value system, and we have a history of brutal de-colonization wars that attest to that.
