greetings a salutations in this holiday season

here are 3 puzzels my prof. sent me today

1) Three people speak simultaneously. 'A says B is lying' ,'B says C is lying', and 'C says A and B are lying'. Who is lying, who is telling the truth?

2) A women says of a man "that man's father was my grandfather's only son" If she is telling the truth what is the relation of the woman to the man?

3) Everyone knows that if you have a piece of cake to be devided between two people the fairest way to do it is to have one person cut the cake while the other person choses from the two pieces that result. In this way it is in the cutter's interest to make as fair a division as possible, given that he will be left with the remaining piece. Can we somehow extend this to 3 and 4 people dividing a peice of cake, where some one makes a cut and someone chose and then someone cuts again etc etc, until we have what all participants accept as a fair piece in the same way as with 2 people dividing a peice?

i don't actually have an answer to the third one so if you come up with something i'll be very interested to see it...

enjoy.
I'm feeling surly right now..

1) A-C are lying, B is telling the truth
2)Her borther
3)No, have the first cut everything equally. If someone chooses a piece midway it does not work.

Question 3 is a little confusing and the structure of the question is weird. Also it's spelled F-A-I-R, if you are copying from what you're teacher wrote he needs to take some engrish lessons :P

1) a is lying, b is lying, c is saying the truth
2) her father
3) one guy is chosen as a cutter one guy as a "chooser" and everyone else waits... lets say there are three people, cutter has to cut up, one third of the cake... the "chooser" says if that piece is dope enough for em' if it aint, the cutter gets the piece and the chooser gets to cut the next piece, the third person becomes the chooser... now if in first place the chooser is satisfied with the piece the cutter cut, the chooser gets the piece and the cutter keeps on cuttin'

'Borther ' Strik?
it's spelled 'brother' you can't make an anally retentive post about someone's spelling and then fuck that up...

anyway...

strik got the first one, B is telling the truth How did you do it? What was your reasoning?

as for the second one, one of you is close but neither one of you has it right...

the third one is interesting because neither one of you has proposed anything that would ensure the fairness of the cuts and the parts that people get in the end in the same way that our scheme for cutting and divinding with two people does, on second thought rawali may be on to something...

i was thinking about this one today. maybe 4 people might be easier to deal with then [ 3...ca ] you get two pieces from one cut and 4 is just a multiple of 2. But something like this...

the first person cuts it in half, the second person cuts one of the halfs in half, now the third person has the choice of either taking one of the quarters thats been cut or they can with the remaining person cut the other half and pick from that...

something like that i think would work although clearly what is above is incomplete at best...

2 is her brother

3 is an extensive form game. Ill upload a picture of it, but heres a discription

For 3 People:

Round 1:First Person: makes Cut into A, B
Round 2:Second Person: Chooses Slice A or B
Round 3:Third Person: Choose to cut either slice A or B into A', A'' or B',B''
Round 4a:First Person: If Player 3 choose to cut player 1's slice, choose between them. If not, keep undivided slice.
Round 4b:Second Person: If player 3 choose to cut player 2's slice, choose between the 2 slices. If he chose to slice Player 1's slice, then keep slice you choose. in round 2
Round 5: player 3 gets left over slice

To check the answer start from the back end:
Round 4: First Person or Second Person will choose Biggest slice from A', A'' or B', B''

Round 3: Third Person knows he will get the smaller of A', A'' or B', B''. Thus, he wants to choose the bigger of A or B and split them evenly

Round 2: Second Person knows The third person will cut bigger of A or B and slice them into even proportions. Thus, Second Person knows that if he chooses the bigger slice, he'll end up with half of it, but if he chooses the smaller slice, he gets to keep all of it.
Thus, Second player will choose larger of : (I) the smaller piece and (II) one-half of the larger piece

Round 1: Player 1 knows he will end up with the smaller of (I) the smaller piece or (II) one-half of the larger piece. Thus, he sets to maximize his slice by making the first cut.

Player 1s Objective in making the first cut: max Y = min {(.5x), (1-x)} where Y=his final slice, and x = slice A, (1-x)=slice B. He does this by setting .5x = (1-x). Hes left with x=2/3. Thus, he will choose to cut the cake into 2 slices, 1/3 and 2/3

several possibilities for question 3...

- bring measuring tape to birthday parties

- person a cuts to the center, person b makes second cut, to the center only, and person c the last cut. then they each choose a slice, a, b, then c.

-person a cuts cake in half, person b tells person c he's an asshole and doesn't deserve any cake.

think about it this way...if grandpa has only one CHILD then they have to be brother and sister, however if grandpa has even on other kid then they can be cousins, the problem only says that the father is the only 'SON' not child...grandpa could have a daughter...and in that case they could be cousins...

B is telling the truth.

If B says the truth, then C is saying that A and B are lying, then he is wrong. So, since C is lying, A and B are either telling the truth or lying. For purpose, since our first affirmation is B saying the truth, then the logical answer would mean A is lying. And since A is saying that B is lying and he's lying by saying that, then B is telling the truth.

It's a fucking typo, I didnt write the same word twice with the exact same missing letter in it or make the same typo which would lead one to believe that you just dont know how to write those given words, such as "fair" not "far" and "puzzles" not "puzzels" both of which you wrote twice and fucked up twice, at least you're consistent in your failures.

I simply pointed out that if your teacher wrote it, that it would be very bad... there is no room for spelling mistakes when you are a teacher.

As for reasoning, question one is simple, B says that C is lying which would imply that either A or B is telling the truth, A says B is lying, thus making the choice simple, A is lying because either A or B is lying and B's statement is directed at C.

Number two can be either a brother or a cousin since she makes no reference to her own father or mother, she could be the daughter of that only son or the daughter of any number of daughters the grandfather has. Both are valid answers, if your teacher doesnt accept them both then he should stop teaching.

Number three I thought was relatively easy and my answer was NO! I dont get what Gamos is trying to explain since the slices need to be equal, not 1/3, 2/3 and whatnot. Have one person cut the whole damn cake into whatever slices are needed, if he gets to pick last then he will be stuck with the smallest thus he will logically make equal slices as best he can with w/e amount of people there are.

it wasn't my teachers fault, i was sick when i posted it, anyway i don't give a fuck about the spelling that's not what it's about...if i could i would go back and correct it...

anyway as for three

"Have one person cut the whole damn cake into whatever slices are needed, if he gets to pick last then he will be stuck with the smallest thus he will logically make equal slices as best he can with w/e amount of people there are."

all this will do is assure that the person who picks first gets the best piece and the last one gets the worst, not what were trying to do which is assure the equality of each piece and that all members accept it as such, with your answer two people can rig the game so long as they can find a way to be the cutter and the first picker, with gamos's answer it doesn't matter who does what everybody get's an equal piece and will accept as such.
I'm feeling surly right now..

Meh, just cut the damned cake into equal pieces, make sure the cutter isnt a noob, if he cuts uneven pieces chop a finger off, he will do it nice and good next time you ask him to make equal pieces.

Problem solved :P Sorry for busting your chops about spelling Basdini, I was in a crappy mood and retorted. My original post was genuine concern I really thought you had copy pasted it.
