Isn't it Lage HaDRON Collider ? :)

Apparently they are going to fire it up tomorrow and there is a slight possibility it'll make Earth implode on itself.

So if you need to get laid, now's the time. Tonight may possibly be humanity's last. :)

actually, it's been going since about noon. They're not running it at full power yet, they're just running some tests. I think it's around October 11th or 21st that they're doing the first full-power test.. THEN the world is gonna end.

There is virtually zero chance the LHC will produce micro-black holes.

Even if it somehow does, they will very likely dissipate in fractions of a second.

Even if they doe form, and are stable, they will be so small so as to sink to the center of the earth and star devouring it at the alarming pace of 1 atom a year.

For frame of reference you have about 7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms in your body.

So it would take billions of lifetimes (or more) for you to even notice the effects if one were stuck in you.

Actually IIRC its the whole point of the operation; to create tiny black holes to study how they're made as it is believe that the conditions inside a black hole are very similar to the big bang/birth of the universe and all that, and that's what they want to study, the big bang.

There's a killer Horizon documentary on it over at [ www.jonhs.net ] well worth watching, as with most horizon docus.
