Ok geeks.

I purchased a 1G slab a few days ago, no problem. Works fine.

Now, after rebooting 2 days ago, I heard 5 short beeps followed by 5 short beeps. After googling that, it might apparently be the motherboard but it wasn't proper to the BIOS version I have so I'm not certain.

Left it at that, it worked fine afterwards. Yesterday, cleaned every fan in there and made sure everything is at it's right place, connected and running. Fired up the computer, ran out ok, shut down after a few minutes.

So when I power it up again, normal behavior : BIOS loads fine, DVD drive, floppy, starts loading XP. BOOM. Shuts down after 10 seconds. Tried again. And again. Everytime.

Obviously, something's screwed up and needs to be replaced.

I'm thinking overheating but the CPU fan works full blast on top of the heat sink.

I wann fix this quick but can't figure out what I need to replace.

I'm thinking either :
- motherboard problems (Asus don't know the model, I'm at work now)
- Graphics card doesn't work (Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT)
- power supply maybe ?

Any insight ? I need to patch it up to work really rapidly, I'm looking into getting an entirely new system sometime soon, just not now.

Thanks in advance peeps !
I'm feeling d&b selektah right now..

sounds like overheating to me, but it is hard to say... Could also be a bad stick of ram.
I'm feeling gangsta right now..

Mico : FAIL. Thank for trying. LOL.

Scotty : I tried without the new RAM and same problem. Either it's not the RAM or it blew up my motherboard. That bitch.

Heh. Keep it coming though, anything is better than nothing.

Did u try in safe mode? Might not even be hardware related
I'm feeling lonely right now..

Have you tried down-clocking your cpu? I mean, maybe it overheats bad enough that the fan can't do it's thing properly. Probably a defective (or wasted) cpu, but that may give you a little while before it dies completely.

In my opinion, it's a question of time.

PM me if you need help with that.

you could also just get a ubuntu boot cd, and boot your pc with it, just to see if it'll shutdown with another os too.
I'm feeling antagonistic right now..

Maximo : yeah, I wanted to try that but as soon as the computer attempts to load the OS (XP in occurance), it crashes so I can't even attempt to boot in safe mode.

Moloch : no, no overclocking. At least, none that I am aware of. I didn't even think about the processor, honestly. It DOES sound an awful lot like overheating but since all the fans are running full speed, I'm starting to wonder.

I meant to say DOWN-CLOCK your cpu. It'll maybe provide you a temporary fix.
And try booting another os.

With 10 seconds-worth of time to pull it off now, I don't see how I could do that. In the BIOS ?

As for booting another OS, the one I had was fine until all Hell broke loose. It's not the OS, meaning no changes were made to the OS to provoke such a godawful screw-up. :)

yeah, well maybe just booting (not Actually installing a new os) happens, i.e: stays alive more than 10 seconds, then you'll know microsoft popped in your cereals. I mean, with everything you tried, I honestly think you don't have much to loose. If anything, strip your pc, and rebuild it part by part and see where it fucks up.

if your computer is shutting down before you even boot an OS (from the bios setup), it could be power related.

linux boot cds are a good test though, if you can run one then (most of) the hardware is probably intact. Most of them have memtest86+ also which can test the ram.

Sounds like overheating. Make sure your cpu fan is tightly connected on top of the cpu(otherwise it will get ridiculously hot ridiculously quick and the only thing you can do to stop it is connecting it properly) and that your power supply is sufficient for your all your parts including the videocard.
I'm feeling bored right now..

OMG. Moondancer wins !

Although I found out before reading this thread today, I got curious last night and unhooked and hooked everything back only to notice the heatsink on top of the processor is held by 4 pegs and one of these pegs was moreless unscrewed ( plastic pegs that secure by turning 90 degrees counter-clockwise, the stupidest design flaw I've seen in a long while ) so the heatsink was only sitting partly on the cpu.

Result : OVERHEATING PROCESSOR, motherboard proactively shuts down to prevent cpu meltdown.

I'm actually pissed it was because of something so friggin' insignificant but relieved nothing got fried.

Thanks a million everyone. Crysis averted. I was starting to get internet/drama withdrawal...

:)

I experienced an identical effect when I also had one peg loose on mine. Except in my case when I went to reinstall the fan again I somehow managed to break ALL 3 OF 4 of those stupid little pegs.. they all fell off from being bent too many times. So I had to run out to Microbytes and I bought a heatsink that screws on from the back. I guess it was for the best cause I ended up fixing 2 problems in one, the initial problem of overheating will never happen again(My pc decided to overheat after months of being overclocked and not properly cooled) and I don't have any pegs left to be broken. FUCK THE PEGS!
I'm feeling bored right now..
