symbols are weird, they only seem to have meaning when we say they do, and only in clearly defined contexts, take something as simple as the "+" symbol...it can mean add in arithmatic (x+y), it can mean beyond or better (C+ and C++ as computer programers know it) and it can also mean hospital. Symbols are hardly as universal as we tend to think they are... the no smoking sign probobly gets pretty close to universal as you can get to that, though i have a hard time seeing someone from a tribe in the middle of Pappua New Guinea knowing what it means...

colors have strange symbolic properties in political and ideological realms:

red: communism
blue: conservative
green: environmentalism
black: anarchy
white: purity

curriously enough if you look at the color thing for red and blue it seems to be opposite for canada and the US, Red states are republican and Blue states are democrat, where in canada red is liberal and blue is conservative...

wikipedia has a great article on colors in politics...

there are two philosophical disciplines that deal with symbols generally

they are

1)semiotics

which deals with signs and symbols in abstract and practical ways

[ en.wikipedia.org ]

2)Hermeneutics

which, although it does not deal with symbols in a direct way, attempts to understand the nature of texts and their subsequent meanings as carriers of information.

One of the most interesting discourses with regards to symbols in the post modern world has to do with the field of philosophy known as Structuralism (and post structuralism and deconstructionism), This school of thought attempted to study symbols in highly rigourous ways so as to arrive at rules for their use within systems (especially in cultural domains). One of the most interesting things to come out of this movement was the notion of the "co-op" of a symbol (or term) by one group from another therby radically changing its meaning (often in highly ideological and political ways) usually one group would have a term that would be used derisively to describe another group, and the group that was being described by the term would then appropriate it to describe themselves therby disarming it of all its power to cause harm, the words 'Nigger', 'Fag' and 'Punk' are all examples of this process. Some see this process as the basis for what could be called 'dialectic symbolic warfare'

structuralism

i hope this was helpful...
I'm feeling surly right now..
