Canada defies China with Dalai Lama meetings

By Randall Palmer

GATINEAU, Quebec (Reuters) - The Canadian government defied China on Monday and proceeded with public meetings with the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader.

China has warned of possible damage to bilateral relations ahead of his visit, but the Canadian government went ahead with a meeting between him and junior cabinet member Jason Kenney in a federal building on Monday morning as a prelude to an afternoon meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

In 2004, then-Prime Minister Paul Martin met the Dalai Lama privately at the home of the Roman Catholic archbishop of Ottawa, but these meetings are in public, government buildings with photographers present.

"I don't care. The important (thing) is meeting (in) person. That I consider is the most important," the Dalai Lama told reporters, standing next to Kenney.

"So whether meeting (the) prime minister in the office or private house doesn't matter, so long as (it is) a meeting with people face to face."

He met Kenney, secretary of state for multiculturalism, in the Department of Heritage offices in Gatineau, across the Ottawa River from the Parliament buildings.

Harper is scheduled to meet with him on Monday afternoon at his office in Parliament. The Dalai Lama will also hold a private meeting with Governor General Michaelle Jean, representative of Canada's head of state, Queen Elizabeth.

The 72-year-old Buddhist monk -- who was granted honorary Canadian citizenship in June -- is also meeting leaders of Canada's opposition parties on Tuesday, though this time in a hotel.

The Chinese embassy would not answer phone calls but in a statement to the Globe and Mail newspaper the Chinese Foreign Ministry denounced the Dalai Lama as a separatist who operates under the guise of religion.

"China has on many occasions made solemn representations to the Canadian side on the proposed visit of the Dalai Lama," it said.

"We call on the Canadian side to clearly understand the nature of the Dalai Lama's separatist activities and treat seriously China's serious concerns, and not to allow the Dalai Lama to visit, not allow him to use Canadian territory for activities to split China, and not to do anything to harm Sino-Canadian relations."

U.S. President George W. Bush and leaders of Congress gave the Dalai Lama the Congressional Gold Medal in a packed ceremony in the U.S. Capitol on October 17.

China canceled an annual human rights dialogue with Germany to show its displeasure with German Chancellor Angela Merkel's meeting last month with the Dalai Lama.

Well in the title I meant that China thinks we care about dividing China. Since that's what the Dolly Llama wants...

I don't honestly think that many non-chinese person in Canada even know that this was an issue.

Heheh I was reffering to your last comment rather than the original subject. I was just saying that considering how they treat chinese in china I don't think they would care even if Vancouver was 100% chinese.

Now that u mention the Dalai Llama wanting to divide China though.. I dunno if that's the case. Tibet was invaded by china, they are their own people and culture. He doesn't want to seperate Tibet from China so he says but for it to have more autonomy. China doesn't respect their culture and would be happy if it was destroyed it seems so I would understand perfectly well if he did want to seperate though I mean maybe he really does, I would want to seperate. When you mention seperation to canadians it has a very negative sound to it though so I understand why they would use that point to convince us the Dalai Llama is a bad person. From my perspective it's not that they think we care, it's that they think we're stupid

I mean I don't even understand how Tibet seperating from China would be dividing the country. It would be like Alaska seperating from the states. Not that I'd have a clue.

basdini: What is so insulting about calling Vancouver a Chinese state? I mean it makes it more dangerous to drive once you're there... but other than that?

ok that was racist,

maybe you should try to inform yourself a little better, perhaps by going to some of the places you think you know so much about...

Truth is I know I am a little racist, but not enough for it to be a problem, I've dated all sorts of colors with no prejudice. Isn't everyone racist in the sense that we preclude or prejudge certain people based on their race? Do you not expect an asian dude to know how to use a computer? or a black dude to know how to play sports? or an indian dude to eat really spicy ass food made from a goat?

As long as it's not murderous or really hurtful, I don't see the problem with something that is as much part of reality as bagels being jewish and fried chicken being... well you know, and that proves my point.

Also, I don't WANT to go to those places and learn about them, I am very selective in the knowledge I gain, it's gotta be useful.

RATHER THAN ACCURATE...

i think people like you are ridiculous, you think you know enough about a place to just pass judgment on it, i try never to pass judgment on any people or country or region unless i've been there once for at least one day, i also tend to think that a person's opinion about a place is better informed the longer they stay there...so i feel comfortable passing judgment and saying that i know about the french and the chinese having lived for extended periods of time in both of those countries, where as a country like austria or japan having only been there briefly,i feel like i can't really say as much, and a country like iran or india, having never been i can't do anything but speculateia

don't be arrogant like a lot of people in the rest of the world that i meet who believe they are well informed about the west (especially america) when i ask them why, they say things like "well i watch a lot of american movies" and then they wonder why i laugh when they say things like "all americans are beautiful" and "all americans are rich" a "and americans don't really work"

are you really much better informed than them, i suspect not.
I'm feeling surly right now..

If the Chinese government starts investing in B.C.'s infrastructures, we realy arent that far from having a Chinese province here in Canada. If the prime minister must censure who he meets to please a foreign country (China for crissake) thats bad news for canadian soverenty.

Whatever dude, it makes more sense that the longer you live somewhere, the more biased you are rather than informed. Any one with half a brain knows that the complexities of judging or knowing a place has little to do with the place itself but rather the people who you deal with when you are there. And as far as THAT is concerned, any place on earth with a few open minded people will surely be deemed a welcoming and hospitable place.
I know only that there is an infinite amount of knowledge I will never be privy to. Beyond that everything I say is purely conjecture based on my interest in discussing that which I do not know.

what are you talking about, direct experience with a place is the only way you can really know it, how could it be otherwise...

Sometimes the personal details and feelings you have about something completely cloud over reasoning when it comes to describing or defining a place. For example, health care is bullshit, because everyone dies, why save the weak? But then you're friend or sibling or parent gets sick and it's "PLEASE SAVE THEM'.

Biased.

i think you can read all you want about a place and it still doesn't mean you have a clue what it's a about, i think the deepest insights regarding a place or a people are beyond words, ie a feeling or atmosphere, these only come come from being there and interacting with the people, all serious academics know this to be true, whether it's africa or south america or russia if you want to be considered well informed about a place you should go work, study and live there, it's also the only real way to get a feel for their language which is fundamental to seriously understanding them.
