Hey everyone,
I have a new laptop but the soundcard sucks. i would like to be able to use cubase on the lappy but when i plug my usb midi controller and hit a key, there is a lag between the second i hit the key and when the sound comes out of the speakers (makes it very hard to align stuff) ..

I was thinking to get an external card but i have no idea what cards can do the trick..

should i :

get a PCMI card ?
get a USB card ?
a Firewire card ?

what are respected brands ??

my lappy is the DELL XPS 1710 .. i heard some firewire cards give them problems.. maybe i should avoid those ones ??

thanks for all or any help !!

PEACE
I'm feeling tiesto ??? :p right now..

This is stupid to say, but make sure you didn't plug the usb into your keyboard, that slows everything down, like clockwork.
MOTU, EMU are great brands too

wait for more advise though :)
I'm feeling psyched right now..

i tested the Focusrite Saphire Le and it works pretty fine
the preamps are damn decent and the price is like 350$

maybe also the T.C. Electronic Konnekt 8D, same price

Presonus Firefox, same price, pretty cool

Right, first thing you need to figure out is what exactly you plan on using the sound card for. If you just want to record midi and have no plans on recording audio then get yourself a smaller card like mike was suggesting. If you plan on perhaps recording synth sounds or expanding your studio, then I'd suggest something maybe a bit higher up like the m-audio firewire or a motu 828.

Me knowing your situation I'd go with one of m-audio firewire cards.

I could type it all and explain why, but if your curious read this article, he explains a lot when it comes to sound cards: [ www.tweakheadz.com ]

I'm using a Firewire 410 and it works great. I've connected it to a few computers and it seems to work pretty well without any problems on all of them.

Btw, how's the keyboard working?
I'm feeling wtf charles? right now..

The keyboard is working great.. a few "sticky" keys but nothing un-berable. i just recorded a 6 minute track using the keyboard.. the track will be nuts when its done !! :D

but yeah, i need the card to use soundforge (when needed, to run cuebase (and all the vst's) and to record mixes (when needed)..

no hardware really.. :)

thanks for all the feedback everyone !! i am still a little confused !! he eh !!
