I have everything set up right (i.e. able to make sound), tried programming the padKontrol in as both a MIDI function (worked) and as a Control Surface (didn't work), have the notes set up properly, etc. etc..

The issue that I'm having is not being able to record what I'm doing in real time.

I was told at the shop that it's possible to have my functions recorded, I've been able to get sound to come out of the NNXT and Redrum, but have not been able to get this product to work in the way I wanted it to when originally purchasing it..

I've looked up solutions on the Korg product help forums and on threads for reason help and have not been able to find any solutions, just a bunch of other people with the same problem.

My laptop is able to take USB plug-ins. My Eridol controller for synths/melodies works perfectly for recording/playing.

Does anyone know how to get this to work?

Thank you!
I'm feeling hiveminded right now..

Yo found an answer on a m-audio yahoo group post... "If you used the MIDI mapping
feature of reason to "learn" the controls, that won't work. All that
does is map the pad on the Axiom to trigger the play button of the
drum cell in ReDrum; it doesn't send the MIDI data to the sequencer. You need to assign the pads to the proper MIDI notes. That way they
will still input to the sequencer. ReDrum responds to notes 36-45..."

.."like Rock said, make sure you
have the notes correctly assigned by selecting a pad, pressing
Advanced>>Data 1 and cycling through the notes until you find one that
responds to the playback on the drum track of your choosing. Or of
course, run through the Reason presets. I think they all have Redrum
notes assigned to them on channel 10 by default. So make a Redrum
machine, load a patch and go up to where it has the 16 channels in
green and select Redrum for channel 10 or whichever one that blinks
red when you press the pad. You can make the pads go to a different
channel, but that's another story."
I'm feeling bleh right now..

Please pardon my bluntness. But why are you using reason to record anything?

Because it's just as good as any other program for recording...we arent all Ableton nerds you know. People still record in FLS, Acid Pro, Cool Edit, Reason...it's their choice. Not everyone can afford a 7-900 $ program.

I don't think that he wants to record any audio with Reason, he just wants to be able to record the moves that he does with his MIDI controller from Reason. ;)

Bingo. So that the results stay.

Yep, already had that one set up (I have 100% functionality of the pad except for the function for the notes to stay in the program that I'm using.. all that happens when I hit a pad is the note plays, it doesn't stick..), but thank you.

Please pardon my bluntness. But why are you using reason to record anything?

Convenience - and also because my laptop doesn't have great specs on it to effectively run something like cubase with reason plugged into it... Never really tried Ableton live, maybe some time in the future, but for now I'm just trying to get my pad to work the way I want it to.

have you tried pressing the play and the record button?

i don't see why this thing would work any differently in reason than anyother midi controler?

you can automate anything you can't control anyway. choose create sequencer track is one doesn't already exist.

dude, if you really wanna have fun, try to get a crack of Live and use it With Reason by Rewire
you're gonna flip out :). if you do only record stuff in live from reason, i'm sure your computer can handle it :)

and AlienZed, me too i did work in Reason for a very long time and when i got Live it was over lol. i must admit that i use it sometimes for specific sounds or tasks (rex player for example) but since Battery 3 is Rex compatible....;)

I'd probably be able to whip up a track in reason a lot faster than in live. I know live very well but I still don't use it much for my own music, I'd have to buy it since the "found" versions tend to explode after a while. I haven't made much music in live but I have used it for live sets, recording an entire album, live processing, and of course dj mash ups. Reason can't do any of those very well, but it tends to be the fastest program to use when I want to just hit record and play a song on a keyboard.

I still use BUZZ most of the time though, I really can't explain that one. I still get the best, dirtiest sound out of that old program.

Yep, and it didn't work.

I went to moog audio today and tried to get it to work, no dice. The akai mpd... 16 I think? Had the same results as well... Spend like an hour and then some in the shop. After all this I hope that the solution is really complicated, because if it's an easy one I'm going to be giving my head a good solid smack for spending all this time trying to get this to work.

We did get it to work with Garage band on their mac system, which leads me to think that something is weird with Reason 3... The product claims to be Reason enabled though.

Tried to call up Korg themselves at the shop, waited on hold for a while while they tried to page the guy, then said their product specialist would contact me within 5 minutes if I left a message. Did that, then waited around for 20 minutes, called back and the office was closed. (ARGH!!)

I'll try calling again tomorrow, but I'm back in Ottawa now so I can't return it if for some reason Reason doesn't support the feature... (I don't see why it wouldn't, but stranger things have happened) until I come back to Montreal (3 weeks away)

you can automate anything you can't control anyway. choose create sequencer track is one doesn't already exist.

Huh? Sorry, maybe I'm just tired but could you run that one by again?

That'd be cool to check out sometime! I should definatly try that out after I get all this stuff working.

I had a problem for years that I couldn't automate certain controls... well it was because there was no sequencer track already created. so right click on whatever you want to automate and choose 'Create Sequencer Track" or something like that, I wish I had Reason here so I could tell you the exact wording...

Ahhh, I get what you're saying now.

So I called up Korg again, looks like the driver on the piece of gear that I bought is about three versions old.

Now all I need to do is wipe the padKontrol driver on my laptop, get a portable hard drive, transfer and update.

Can't wait!
Update » Rob_Black wrote on Thu Apr 19, 2007 @ 2:51pm
The version dealeo didn't fix the issue, but when we re-installed everything and re-programmed the padKontrol as a Keyboard w/ controls it worked for recording purposes.

Wicked!

So when I want to record on the fly I can use either my edirol or my korg (but only using one tool in Reason at a time instead of using one tool for each the edirol and the korg), but if I wanted to play the both of them at the same time without recording (or with just recording the edirol), all I need to do is reprogram the padKontrol as a midi function again and assign the instrument I want it to affect to the proper midi channel.

I offically love Korg Tech Support.

Now time to lay down some serious beats!! :)
