Yesterday, as Montrealers, along with many around the world celebrated International Women's Day - the event was marred by police brutality in which three young women were assaulted, injured and traumatized. Among the issues that were brought up during the speeches at Montreal's women's day march was that in Iran women were prevented from celebrating international women's day. And women in Pakistan were also attacked yesterday in a women's day event. Yesterday's events make ensure Montreal shares this distinction!

Marchers celebrating International Women's Day had walked from Place Emilie Gamelin (Berri Square) to Phillips Square, along Ste-Catherine Street. After speeches they made their way back to Berri Square. The police made an announcement asking people to walk on the sidewalk. Jaggi Singh, who had been one of many male supporters among the 200 strong celebrating international women's day moved onto the sidewalk. The others continued marching in the street. Police officers began to rush towards Singh, still walking on the sidewalk. They grabbed him and threw him against a nearby police car.

Other marchers gathered around the car out of concern for the violent way in which police were intervening. Police began hitting and pushing people indiscriminately. Several people were knocked to the ground with batons and night sticks. Emma Strople, a 17 year old marcher, was hit in the chest with the end of a night stick and thrown to the ground, by an officer later identified as Doyon. Her ribs were bruised, she was winded, trembling from shock and her knee was cut open enough that the blood seeped through her jeans. Two other women were also injured - one woman's lips and mouth were swollen and bleeding, from being punched in the face by a police officer; another left with cuts on her knee and stomach. The police showed a total disregard for the injuries mounting around them. They placed Jaggi Singh in the police car and began to leave. The marchers that remained left by Berri Metro.

The 8th March Committee of Women of Diverse Origins, one of the key groups involved in the march strongly denounces last night's police brutality yesterday and the arrest of Singh. Are we to go back to the time when women in Canada were not considered 'persons'? When women were to be seen and not heard? In Quebec today on the eve of an election we have seen how violence against women is still something that is trivialized, including by those that seek to represent us in the democratic system. Yesterday's police attack on women and their allies proves that even those who are supposed to be the guardians of the law and ensure gender equality, see women as people to be controlled with the threat and the use of violence. Women, as we struggle for equality are facing a backlash. How can we feel safe when the police themselves exhibit the violence that is endemic to patriarchy?

More than ever the police brutality of yesterday demonstrates that we have a long way to go; that women's struggles for equality that have always linked to improving the lives of our families and communities, ensuring democratic processes of equality and participation of ALL in the political process are constantly BLOCKADED by the state and its representatives. How can women seek assistance against the violence in their lives when those entrusted with their safekeeping are perpetrators of brutality and violence?

Last night's police violence is shameful and fearful. We demand that the City of Montreal and the government of Quebec immediately investigate the assaults and arrest of yesterday and that women, our allies and supporters feel safe and free to work in support of equality and justice.

And this is why I'm a firm believer that the only GOOD cop, is a DEAD cop.

We should have an international beat-cops-to-death day where everyone gathers with any weapons they can find and walk around violently beating and/or killing every single fucking pig they find.

Similar article, has an e-mail address & phone number at the end.

I passed some of the marchers and at least six following police cars on my way back from doing groceries; the police cars all hit their sirens probably around St-Denis & Ste-Catherine. (I was half a block away when I heard it)

Those hippies will always make me laugh ... they kick a dog chewing it's bone and then complain that the dog bites them back. Brilliant ...

Here is the best tip you'll ever have not to get beat up by cops : Don't friggin' provocate them ! Blocking the streets is already provocation enough, rushing after cops that are aresting someone, when they are surrounded by hundreds of potential aggressors, is just plain stupid. What did you expect ? They did their job and protected themselves.

When surounded by 200 aggressive people, you don't take the time to discuss, you take them down fast, finish your job, and just take off.

to those who already got beaten down in a manifestation: take responsibility for your actions for once, and stop complaining.

i wonder if the protest was legal - if it was legal, the police had no right to do what they did.

Most of the time that will work but we still have major problems with police brutality and people definitely get beat up for no reason. If a cop is looking for a fight it doesn't really matter what you do.

and I do expect much more of people who's job is to protect others, not just themselves, not really themselves at all. Cop standards are way too low these days. They should be more like wise samurais and shit.

wait..you think that police officers should comport themselves in a manner that disregards their own personal safety/security?

Yes. Not that disregards their safety, that puts the safety of others(aka the weak) first.

The problem is that cops have the right to defend themselves, but at the same time, people have the right to defend themselves from the police.

Police don't (or at least shouldn't) have any more rights to live than anyone else.

If a cop ever threatened my life, I would have no issues with fighting back. I really don't care what the law says, survival is the only thing that matters.

I do agree to this, and I do agree that police abuse does exists, but in that article, they speak of protestants that got beat up trying to prevent the police from arresting someone. If they did arrest that person for no good reason, they would have had to let him go anyway, and you would have been able to issue a complaint after.

They might or might not have been in the right to arrest that man, I won't add anything on that without knowing the police report, maybe he was insulting cops from the sidewalk, thus creating a threat that the pacific manifestation turns into a mob of troublemakers.

One thing is sure tough, they were in the right to take down any potential aggressor that tried to prevent them to do their job, and since they were largely outnumbered, they were in the right to use physical force to do so. It's only self-defense, men or women, women day or not.

In replys to DJneoform, if a cop would threaten my life, I would also be defending myself, but if they did so because I perpetrated an act that required them to threaten me ... I would defend myself, but not take them responsible for the way they acted.

It doesn't say they tried to prevent the police from arresting someone, it says they "gathered around the car out of concern for the violent way in which police were intervening". And the reason police intervened in the first place is very unclear. We weren't there and we can't just assume they asked for it. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't.

..surrounding cops IS reason for them to take action. Take a look at their track record of beating people. Especially at a large gathering of people, 2, 3, even 10 cops, surrounded by 20-30 people, if not more, could turn into a massacre of the cops.

Doesn't mean I agree with it, but they were given their reason for doing it, and no court is going to rule against that. In the same way that Ian said if a cop was beating him he would defend himself, they were in a situation where there was very much the potential for the cops to be on the recieving end of the beating, and a cop or 2 getting beaten/immobilized means that now the people who did it can also take their gun, which is something that they have to protect against at all cost.

I still think that the only good cop is a dead cop, and that mob SHOULD have fucking beat those fuckers. Give them a taste of what they've been dishing out.
I'm feeling bleh right now..

I agree with Screwhead.

I think cops just aren't fucking doing there jobs anymore. All they do is run around busting kids for smoking pot and give out speeding tickets in places where speeding isn't even that dangerous.

like honestly... how many of you ever got a speeding ticket in a school zone at 3pm? I doubt very few... Most of the time the fuckers are waiting on 3-4 lane streets where the speed limit is 50 at like 9pm. There not protecting us... there just filling there pockets.

The problem is nobody wants to be the ones chasing murderers and fallowing pedophiles. They all take the easy way out. They know that those 3-4 kids smoking pot after school are an easy target... there not gonna harm them. They go for them instead of chasing the gangs who have guns, who in reality are much more of a threat then the kids.
I'm feeling better :) right now..
