Saphir's Mix thursday celebrates International Women's Day thurs march 8th

the fucked up thing is that we wanted to have Miss Bijoux come down and play again before she leaves for Montpellier, and when we asked her who she would like to play with, she said Maus and Rue. now, I'm all for women DJing but sometimes it seems contrived or gimmicky to do a "girl DJ" night, you know what i mean.. when we contacted Maus to ask her if she was willing, she let us know that in fact March 8th is International Women's Day.. and the rest is history. So come out and celebrate with three of the best DJs in Montreal cuttin mad styles for ya head, ya soul and yo hips

MAUS
Louise Gauvreau a.k.a Maüs was raised in Montreal by Jazz and Disco music-freaks. She is the queen of mashed potatoes and once dreamed to be Barry White's wife. She was also acclaimed world-wide in URB (The Next 100 - 2001), CODA, Mixer, XLR8R and Wax magazines for crossing lines, breaking through categories, and defying expectations.
Back in 1997, under the moniker of Mouse Factory, Louise started to produce events in Montreal, inviting local and international talent with the simple intention of sharing and playing the sound she fell for. In 1999, she had already opened for David Bowie, Moby, St-Germain and Rony Size. In 2000, her eloquently mixed debut CD Intersections (Haute Couture Records, 2000), featuring artists such as Omni Trio, Amon Tobin, Plug and Tee Bee, clearly demonstrated many crossroads of the D&B movement. Establishing Maüs as a substantial contributor to the scene, Intersections earned her an honourable ranking on URB Magazine's NEXT 100 List and left a strong impression to the worldwide press. The Intersections tour included Montreal's Club Soda leaving show, Barcelona's Sonar Festival, Les Francofolies de Larochelle, MEG Festival Paris (Batofar), Lisbon (Lux), London, Prague and Budapest. In 2001, she was commissioned to mix the compilation for Montreal's annual Cream Festival, Cream CD3 (YUL Records) further showcasing her now predominant minimal-tech and electro-tech-house sound. Maüs also played her sound in Intl festivals such as Montreal Intl Jazz Festival (1999, 2003, 2006), Les Vieilles Charrues (France) and many more. Her signature is groovy with a sensual but firm touch. Paradoxical, she loves cerebral music that makes you move and deconstructed rythms with a funky but darkette attitude. - "A petite young lady with a surpirising force, Maüs took over and gave the crowd what they had been waiting for. From ethereal soul tracks to slightly twisted sounds, her energetic presence behind the decks carried through Aria s speakers stacks in a way that I havent heard for quite some time" - Chad Eccleston, Xpander Magazine, NL
Today, Maüs continues to charm international audiences with her dynamic approach to electronic dance music. She held a residency in the main room of Montreal afterhours Club ARIA from July 2002 till Novemebr 2006. She is now a monthly resident at Telephunk wich is held every tuesday at Montreal’s Salon Daome. She plays regularly in Europe in Dominican Republic. While dabbling in music production since 2003, she remixed legendary new/cold-wave formation Trisomie 21 in 2004. Her remix of The Sweet Running Over (Happy Mystery Child, Le Maquis) appears on the triple CD project, The Man is a Mix alongside The Hacker, David Carretta and Jack de Marseille. You can hear her voice on most of her work and some collaborations including Leo Cruz's Disco Musique (Saboteur Musique) and Blanali's Victim (Techsound records) wich is now available on [ Beatport.com ] and will soon be released on vinyl. Her first live set was heard at Montreal's Intl Jazz Festival in 2005 with bass player Gilles Brisebois. Maüs has returned in her home studio for winter 2007. À suivre...

MISS BIJOUX
Hailing from France’s Montpellier region, Miss Bijoux has been behind the tables since 1998. Her avid involvement in the scene led her to work at Le Caze record store, while her DJ talents caught the eye of local DJs such as Miss Airie, Rykkks or Tom Pooks, all of whom she would perform with regularly over ensuing years. Musically an early interest in trance would evolve over the years to include progressive, house, minimal, experimental and techno -especially Detroit techno’s warm, synth-based sounds.

Shirking technical gimmickry or fancy turntable tricks, Miss Bijoux’s rapport with the listeners and her dancefloor remains the guiding principle behind her track selection and mixing style. Performing abroad in Paris, London, Manchester and Montreal has allowed her to further expand the breadth of her music experience and repertoire. Whether favouring techno, tech-house, trip hop or samba, Miss Bijoux’s fans trust that her sets are a window into her soul: deep, emotive and irresistible.

DJ RUE
Introduced to mostly 4-to-the-floor heavy electronic music through the Chicago rave scene, Rue stumbled across a copy of "Faces of the Future," a cd that was purportedly mixed by Grooverider. Rue fell in love with the DnB sound then and there. In a city so saturated with house music, perhaps this was a small rebellion. Grooverider's "Mysteries of Funk" as well as DB's "Shades of Technology" mix barely left the discman in 1999. In 2000, when neurofunk drum and bass was picking up steam and DnB was really beginning to stretch its wings, Rue began buying records and making mixtape after mixtape, until they sounded just right.
Now self-taught and determined after 6 years in the mix, behind the decks Rue is known for her extremely tight mixes, seamless blending, and her creative taste in track selection. Sticking to simple, well-constructed dancefloor tunes, Rue has rocked crowds across Canada and the US. She has propelled her DnB stylings from its early rave roots into a fresh, deep, and cultivated sound that always maintains an edge. "The responsibility of the dj is to be a medium for other people's positive sonic experience - you have to find a balance between what you like and what the audience likes but just doesnt know it yet." Rue lives in Chicago summers, and Montreal fall and winters (brrr!), djing often in both places. This past year Rue has joined forces with the amazing Cyan and Jasmine of Women on Wax Montreal, as well as working with fellow producers such as Pipeline and Subtone, and vocalists MC Lil' Bit and Jae Storm. As TeeRue the fledgeling producer, her influences range from classic drum and bass (where the heart is), to tech house and electro, to ghettotech, breakcore and dubstep, to neurofunk and liquid funk drum and bass. Always learning, the sky aint no limit!

coming soon to Jeudis Mix:

Thu March 15th: DJ CZECH (Vancouver, BC, [ www.djczech.com ] [ www.myspace.com ] + SIXTOO (Ninja Tune, Bully Records, [ www.sixtoo.net ] DJ Bind & Evader MC [ www.djbind.com ] (see below for artist info)

CZECH
Most underground-oriented Canadians living on the west coast of Canada are familiar with the legendary Soul Kitchen weekly event at Tommy Africas nightclub in Canadas top ski and snowboard destination, Whistler, British Columbia. Few, however, recall that it was DJ.Czech who introduced the event to BC over thirteen years ago. Indeed, today, Czechs Soul Kitchen remains the longest running club night in Whistler, and continues to showcase some of the worlds renowned DJ talent. Thus, Czechs initial step into Canadas Underground in 1989 has spawned a long prosperous career, for Czech has since become a household name for breaks-lovers everywhere. A Vancouver resident for the thirteen years, Czech has further established powerful draw to the already-thriving local Vancouver club scene. His residencies at Lucy Mae Brown Rusty Trombone Sundays and Le club a GO-GO on Thursdays with Vinyl Ritchie (Wicked Lester), coupled with his vast musical knowledge and impeccable turntable skills, have helped to establish Vancouver internationally as one of Canadas leading cities for up front electronic music. Importantly, though, these residencies have not interfered with his tight touring schedule.
Initially self managed, Czechs reputation has led to play at prestigious clubs and massive raves throughout Europe and North America every weekend for last five years. HeadliningAlongside The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Orbital, Crystal Method, Rabbit in the Moon, Porno for Pyros, and countless others, has not been uncommon for Czech. His next step - writing and producing his own tracks was inevitable. Constantly building his impressive home studio, his prime outlet for his music so far has been Futuristic Funk Records a joint venture involving himself and two other Vancouverites. Already a label in Vancouvers foreground, Futuristic Funk Records is aimed at showcasing no only Czechs own material, but other Canadian talent as well. With such an extensive history in the scene, and so many accomplishments under his belt, it is no surprise that Czech continues to represent Canada as one of the most preeminent breaks DJs in the world.

SIXTOO
The most convicted felon of the 1200 Hobos Team. The Sebutones unofficial cure for loneliness. Material Homewrecker. Loyal chief physician to the broken hearted, desperate and dislocated. Cult-leader. Anticon graduate. Box Cutter-wielding threat to soundmen everywhere. We could feed you the bullshit all day…or we can sell you all the lofty dreams in tonic form.
If you followed the "underground" hip-hop movement in North America during the late 90’s, you may have seen his name on lots of the records, and you probably saw him on stage at many a show around that time. Buck 65, Sebutones, Sage Francis, Peace (Freestyle Fellowship), L’ronius, Aquasky, The Goods, and various Anticon members all have a place in the story. It’s a long story, all there in recorded form if you want to do the work and spend the time. It’s all relevant to what Sixtoo is doing today, but neither him nor any of the aforementioned people tend to dwell on the past. They’re all in their own place now and have come into their own in different ways.
Early 2000 is when it all really started coming together. Just before leaving Halifax he released Duration, a record that, for the first time, took him away from the mic, and put him solely behind the sampler. The results were heralded as an instrumental hip-hop classic, and things started looking up-way up-for Sixtoo.
The following year saw him freshly re-located to Montreal, and signing on with UK based Vertical Form Records. The relationship with Vertical Form saw the release of "Antogonist Survival Kit", a dark-ass record that showcased both sides of his skills : back on the mic for half of it, and hitting the SP for the 2nd half. It was signature Sixtoo production and rhymes, but one also got the sense that his new surroundings in the North end of Montreal were starting to bring something different to the mix.
A lot has been written and speculated about the effect of Montreal winters on local musicians. It takes some long, cold, dark months living by the railroad tracks to produce something like Godspeed You Black Emperor. Alien8 Records, Constellation Records, Mutek Festival. Ever since Amon Tobin moved to the city things have been getting just a little bit denser with his sound. And the same can be said for Sixtoo. By the time 2003 rolled around, Sixtoo had come to the attention of the Montreal Ninja Tune office and he found himself with a fresh new contract, and a turning point on which to really assess his work up to that point and to decide on how he wanted to proceed. All the releases up to that point had reached some type of notoriety, but also were hinting at another level of untapped potential.
So when it came time to record what would become "Chewing On Glass & Other Miracle Cures" a completely new style was employed. Not content to make another record based on mining wax for samples, he set about tapping into various live musicians to get the source material that would ultimately be chopped up and re-arranged for this record. Taking the basic idea of sample-based music but building the samples from live sources, and in some cases just letting the live elements take over. An organic approach, but also one that doesn’t ignore the current movements of microsampling and effects programming. All in all…it’s something else. Can’s Damo Suzuki, Norsola and Thierry from Godspeed You Black Emperor, Matt Kelly, Eric Craven from The Hanged Up, Sixtoo, and many more can all be heard programmed and chopped in the signature Sixtoo dark/sinister way. All brought together to create what is essentially a psyche rock/jazz masterpiece as made by a long time hip-hop producer.
So know this…Sixtoo is on some entirely other shit. Sampling live as opposed to sampling records. Playing as a musician instead of a collage-artist. Working with people that can help to fully realize the ideas within the music, as opposed to strangling ideas in order to keep them contained and manageable.
Contained is safe, and safe is played. Sixtoo is out of the box, and it has all just started, again.
