What'S Wrong With Patents

This article describes a firm that supposedly patented playing MPEG off of a device. Someone please shoot them!!
My question is, how can you patent something that involves a medium you don't own. It'd be like me patenting breathing oxygen out of the air. |

| Well in the case of Microsoft, they licensed it from Fraunhofer (while Fraunhofer did not have the right to license it...yeah I know pretty much everybody though that the patent was owned by Fraunhofer), what is usually done in a case like that is that the company then sue the original licensor to get its money back (but good luck to Microsoft suing Fraunhofer for 1.53 billions...) |

| I just think it's stupid that some people think they actually own anything... I mean, if it can be done, it can be done by anyone. Patents are for the weak who feel the need to legally say "I saw it first! It's mine!"

| fraunhofer invented the mp3 technology, they deserve to be compensated for it. If you want a free alternative there are the wonderful OGG and flac formats. OGG requires more computing power but it is an excellent format. |
