Making That Decision : Music Vs School / Career

How many people here have had to make that difficult decision ?
Having to choose between school / a promising career in your field of study and music is a headache isn't it ? Combine the two ? Can be done. I don't know many people who can pull it off tho ! Music imo is a full-time job in itself... especially if you play out at the same time... promote events, etc. Well, that's what I think. My question to the dj's and producers would be : what have you chosen or what will you choose ? Music or your career ( read : financial security and peace of mind ) ? Is music a hobby for you or did you decide to leave school in order to make your dream of succeeding in the music industry a reality ?
I'm feeling grimey right now.. |

it would be a bad idea to consider music as a full time job imo
i mean, until you got a record deal, continue to do your day job... it's just being realistic
I'm feeling pfft heheh right now.. |

Okay look at your CDs, all the mp3 you listen to, all your favourite producers and dj's
That is your music career competition, you have to be better than your music collection to make it or at least start believing you are that good. |

You don't need to become a porn star, just have a sex-tape "leak" like paris hilton. Doesn't matter what you do, if it passes around enough you'll become an over-night celebrity. Just make sure you pretend to be pissed off and start some drama or something.
I'm feeling craptacular right now.. |

Well, to be honest, i would HIGHLY recommend actually going for the career and keeping the music as a hobby/moonlighting gig. While a lot of people on this forum are young, most don't even know what they want to do in life. i didn't too until i hit 22. So my best advice, go for the safe reliable thing, and do your music on your own time afterwards. |

Turn music into a career. Learn how to do sound recording / producing for other people, stuff like that.
I don't find it possible to work a 40 hour job (especially if it is manual labor) and then have enough time to make music. I don't make money from my music right now, but I do plenty of sound/video/computer stuff for other people. You should try and make sure whatever job you do helps you with music, directly, not just financially. I'm perfectly happy working in fields that are close to music (some computer and sound/video stuff), but I'd hang myself if I had to work as an office drone or something. Update » nothingnopenope wrote on Tue Jan 16, 2007 @ 10:09pm note: if you aren't willing to invest technically into music (learning many programs, some music theory, sound theory), you should keep it a hobby. Also if you are a DJ, you should definitely keep it a hobby. |
