This guy goes to Utah and tries to convert Mormon's to atheism (Mormons go door to door Saturday mornings trying to convert people)..

It's really funny to see their violent reactions... Another example of the hypocracy of religious people.

[ ] God Delusion

i highly recommend this book for everyone. I didn't finish it as people keep borrowing my copy.

In his preface, Dawkins writes that The God Delusion contains four "consciousness-raising" messages:

* Atheists can be happy, balanced, moral, and intellectually fulfilled.
* Natural selection and other scientific theories are superior to a "God hypothesis" in explaining the living world and perhaps even the cosmos.
* Children should not be labeled by their parents' religion. Terms like "Catholic child" or "Muslim child" should make people wince.
* Atheists should be proud, not apologetic, because athiesm is evidence of a healthy, independent mind

That's the usual bullshit thiests will tell you. I've probably got tighter morals than most religious people.

my ex-boss (who was still a nice person but anyways) was afraid his 6 yr old kid would eventually turn gay because you know in this country we accept homosexuality. He could see guys holding hands and "decide" to be gay...*sighs*

* sigh * People like this should live in Antartica, where temptation is not an issue...and we are free of such retrograding close-minded people.

Any way I look at it, any religion that can't come to grips with other people's sexual orientation, sex or race is just downright ignorance to me.

The more I learn to accept other people's religious beliefs, the more I notice they can't even begin to return the favor out. " So much for a compassionate and respect-based religion, pal. "

" Love thy neighbor as thyself ". Ok yeah, you can come back to me with that when you actually follow those strong beliefs you abide by and try to impose on everyone all the fucking time, dumbass.
I'm feeling an itch coming on right now..

Morality has nothing to do with religion. It's a social characteristic that develops subconsciously in stages as we mature. Lawrence Kohlberg describes the development as a three level process each involving two developmental stages which are accuratety defined below...

Level I: Preconventional Morality

Stage 1: Punishment-avoidance and obedience

Individuals make moral decisions on the basis of what is best for themselves, without regard for the needs or feeling of others. They obey rules only if establihed by more powerful individuals; they disobey when they can do so without getting caught

Stage 2: Exchange of favors

Individuals begin to recognize that others also have needs. They may attempt to satisfy the needs of others if their own needs are also met in the process. They continue to define right and wrong primarly in terms of consequences to themselves.

Level II: Conventional Morality

Stage 3: Good boy/good girl

Individuals make moral decisions on the basis of what actions will please others, especially authority figures. They are concerned about maintaining interpersonal relationships through sharing, trust, and loyalty. They now consider someone's intentions in determining innocence or guilt.

Stage 4: Law and order

Individuals look to society as a whole for guidelines concerning what is right or wrong. They perceive rules to be inflexible and believe that it is their "duty" to obey them.

Level III: Postconventional Morality

Stage 5: Social Contract

Individuals recognize that rules represent an agreement among many people about appropriate behavior. They recognize that rules are flexible and can be changed if they no longer meet society's needs.

Stage 6: Universal ethical Principle

Individuals adhere to a small number of abstract, universal principles that transcend specific, concrete rules. They answer to an inner conscience and may break rules that violate their own ethical principles.

Well not everyone religious is stupid. The stupid ones follow the wise ones but are too stupid to understand what the wise ones say. My grandmother never so much as uttered a word about religion or god of any kind to me, not once in my life, she decided I shouldn't be baptised even though she went to church every sunday and read the bible every night. She said I should be able to make the decision by myself when I'm older. She didn't tell me what she thought but she thought that parents should resist all temptation to talk to their children about what they believe, even outside of religion. Religion does encourage stupidity and closed-mindedness and she knew that very well even as a religious person. She didn't beleive in the common interpretation of her religion becuase those interpretations are made by idiots. Before someone is ready to be religious they must first be wise. The problem is not religion itself, it's how people interpret it and unfortuneatly for that reason knowing someone's religion is not synonymous with knowing what they believe. So don't be so sure that the favour can't be returned, like with anything there's mostly stupid people, and like with anything, theres some smart people hiding inbetween the cracks but a true non-hypocritical religious person would be able to respect despite anything.

I think what I consider true religiousness has more to do with respect than anything, respect of the whole world big and small, inside and out. I think that's what it's supposed to be.

I'm pretty confident that as more time passes Existentialism, Relativism, and Scientology will be fused together into a modern age religion which will rearrange the way people think and perceive life, not based on beliefs which are all found externally, but based on true knowledge which can only be found internally. If anything, once individuals and societies come to terms with the reasons for existence, evolution, and social development, the only faith that will remain will be faith in finding truth and the benefits of applying knowledge found.
