have fun

ravedave : although I have seen many dj's in many genres use cd at one time or another, I'm pretty sure the only cd based techno culture at this point is psytrance and its variants. unless you plan on spinning one of them or mp3's (yuck) I'd stick with turntables, needless to say there are releases of most commercial and semi commercial electronic styles on cd, (and then again most are pre-mixed), theres much more variety on vinyl.

Having played both for years, I strongly suggest turntables over CDJs TO BEGIN WITH at least. Once you've mastered mixing with turntables, you'll have no problem mixing with CDJs. Apparently, it's way harder to learn the other way around ( CDs ---> turntables )

So I'd go with vinyl first if I were you. :)

i dunno about that, i've seen plenty of Vinyl djs who can't handle a cd player very well.

however i do suck donkey balls with vinyl, that's just cause i never try.. i doubt that's true..

That's mostly because there isn't a standard for how CDJs work. The wheels from one company to the other handle completely diffrently in how much and how they bend and how you cue, so unless you've used the same kind of CDJ before, you're pretty much learning them all over again (though with more of an idea what to do than when you'd first start)

ravedave.... br34th3 is right on that one... but not everybody has 100$ per week to spend on new CDs. it's better to avoid mp3s if you can, but if you're starting and not too sure what you wanna do or just (like me ) really broke all the time, etc... Don't waste all your money in the beginning. CDs are a good choice, the gear is cheaper and CDs are cheaper + last longer + easier to learn with. You can always adjust to vinyls/buy TTs when you decide what style you wanna play or even if it still interests you and want to pursue that (believe me it's a disappointing business, there's NO money to be made and people fuck you over a lot).
I'm a very poor person so I just bought myself a used dual rack (american audio) at Centre Musical Ahuntsic... paid 300$ for it... works fine! there's a bit of a delay on the play but it's not big enough that you can easily bring your track back onbeat.
thats it.
if you're rich, well... lucky you buy tts and vinyls!

very true. the (GAY) CDJ-100 doesn't have a speed sensitive wheel so no matter how fast you spin tht fucker it doesn't matter, instead it's how long you spin it for, which is a severe pain in the ass. it might as well be a pitch bend button.

thank god they created the CDJ-800 and CDJ-1000.. :P

the 1000 *should* be the standard though since it's so damned great. :D

I can't stand the 800, dunno why it was so weird when I was using it at electric church, but I totally thought they could have done a better job on it. The 1000 is great though, no complaints on that.

Idealy though, I just want to cue it up like vinyl and then use pitch bend buttons that react like Traktor (kinda like the Numarks at Saphir)

why would you need to cue it like on vinyl? if anything that's where the superiority of CD's come in over vinyl.

I can hit play then cue 6 times in a second if i wanted to.. which is great if you missed where you want to start playing, or if you want to get your phrasing perfectly.. cueing on vinyl is a pain in the ass cause if you start 8 beats early by accident, you have to quickly backcue to your spot and hope you catch it in time.. with CDs there's no worrying cause the cue button takes you right back..

I mean like how the pioneers do that "stuttering one frame" to find your spot. The numark CDJs, when you've got it paused and use the wheel, handle like if you had the motor off and were sliding a record around on a platter with the needle on it. Once you've found your spot you just set it as a cue point. It's the frame stuttering that I don't like.
