Secret drug tunnel busted on U.S.-Canada border

Authorities in the United States have busted a drug-running operation on the border of Washington state and British Columbia that used a tunnel to transport marijuana.

CTV News Vancouver confirmed that the RCMP officers were involved in the Wednesday bust, which was led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Homeland Security is also involved in the investigation.

A greenhouse targeted in the search was near 264th Street and Zero Avenue in Langley, B.C., south and east of Vancouver. The town on the U.S. side of the border is Lynden, Wash.

The tunnel was described as sophisticated and well-maintained. Authorities had been watching construction on the site for eight months.

The exact length of the tunnel was not known, but a source told the Associated Press that it ran from the building on the Canadian side south to a house on the U.S. side about 90 metres from the border.

KING-5 in Seattle reports that arrests have been made. AP reported three to five arrests.

The DEA is not providing any further details, but the U.S. Attorney handling the case will speak at a news conference in Seattle Thursday morning.

The DEA and the White House have complained previously about the volume of Canadian marijuana (known as "B.C. Bud") entering the U.S. through Washington state.

An estimated 880 to 2,200 tons of marijuana are grown in Canada, according to a report in Time magazine last year. Police estimate 90 per cent of the crop ends up in the U.S.

White House drug czar John Walters once blamed the high potency of B.C. Bud in part for a rise in marijuana-related emergency room incidents. "Canada is exporting to us the crack of marijuana," Walters said.

The truth is... The tunnel was bringing in Heroin from Seattle.

... Nah, I pulled that out of my ass. Mind you, those numbers do seem a little low.

I know someone in kentucky who's brother is aparently a marijuana addict. He's been to a hardcore lockdown rehab 3 times for "marijuana addiction" And aparently they all think that weed is a life-threatening, dangerously addictive drug.

Man, I wish I was kidding about that.

I know what you mean.

The only thing that I question is how bad others get affected? Is the Weed really THAT potent?

There was an article that followed this one about "Drugs Use Increasing Worldwide" and the UN mentioned that betweem the U.S and Africa, they have the highest rates of people checking themselves in rehab for Marijuana addiction.

Now I've been smoking copious amounts of weed since the beginnings of teenage life -sure I may be lazier and a bit more dull around the edges of my mind, yet I don't think that marijuana could ever affect me in such a degenerative way that I would need to goto the hosptial. Amphetamines and other opiates; yes. Marijuana; are you serious?

I thought "half-baked" was fiction.

man it's fuckin' crazy. Like, what the fuck are they smoking that makes them check themselves into a hospital? I mean, the only thing I could think of is if maybe they get like a panic attack from being paranoid, but fuck, come on, that's like way exagerating.

Here's more Info.

3 arrested as cross-border tunnel found
[ sympatico.msn.cbc.ca ]

Three men from Surrey, B.C., face drug charges after the discovery of a tunnel running from Langley to Washington state that authorities say was built to transport drugs between Canada and the United States.

Police say the 1½-metre high, one-metre wide tunnel runs from a metal Quonset hut just north of the border in Langley to an abandoned house in Lynden, Wash. – just 90 metres south of the border.

Francis Devandra Raj, 30; Timothy Woo, 34; and Jonathan Valenzuela, 27, face charges in the U.S. of conspiracy to distribute marijuana and conspiracy to import marijuana.

They are accused of smuggling 42 kilograms of marijuana through the 110-metre tunnel across the border and into waiting vans.

Police say it's the first tunnel they've ever found along the Canadian border.

The tunnel runs from a depth of one to three metres and is reinforced with iron bars and 2 x 6 wooden planks.

U.S. government agencies, including the FBI and drug enforcement officials, had been monitoring its construction for eight months, allowing its completion so that authorities could monitor the activities of those constructing it.

Investigators had even placed cameras and microphones inside the tunnel.

They moved in and sealed the tunnel on Wednesday, shortly after it opened.

It was constructed using shovels, as well as a winch and carting system to remove the dirt.

well, André told me yesterday it was a 6 billion dollar industry in Canada. I'm a dont know. and I don't know how that compares with other industries, I think it's supposed to be the /1 or /2 industry though. Im gonna try to find out for sure.

At one point I remember them saying that there are more car accidents related to pot than to alcohol, so maybe that's what they are talking about. Things that involve timing/co-ordination/NOT spacing out.

i find it very hard to believe that there are more pot-related car accidents than alcohol related ones.... very hard to believe...

unless you're not talking about fatal accidents, but fenders benders and shit included... but even so.. i'm quite certain alcohol related car accidents far outweigh the pot-related ones

Marijuana collectively across the country has an export value of $20 billion according to the RCMP.

BC accounts for $10 billion.

In contrast, BC's major export industry is the $6 billion forestry industry. So weed is making $4 billion more in UNTAXED dollars than the largest legitimate industry in BC. Simple economics suggests its time to legalize.

No way... who would they export it to? All other countries consider it a dangerous drug. Besides the States would freak if Canada went right out and legalized it; they already don't bother smokers much so I ain't complaining. You can not export 10 billion dollars worth of drugs to the USA and so you can't consider it as part of the economy; I'm sure a lot of hash and shrooms and pills are also exported and making millions of dollars! Let's become the USA's pusher!!!!

marijuana can contribute to psychotic episodes in people who already have a pre disposition to it.
