MANCHESTER UNITED SOLD OFF
17.5.2005. 08:31:35

In what’s been seen as a clash of sporting cultures, American billionaire Malcolm Glazer has taken complete control of Manchester United against the wishes of supporters of the world's richest soccer club.

His ₤790m (A$1.9b) raid means he now holds just over 75 percent of the club, enabling him to de-list the club from the London Stock Exchange and possibly turn it into a private company.

If he secures 90 percent of the stock, Mr Glazer can forcibly buy out the remaining shareholders.

Mr Glazer’s interest in Manchester is purely financial – he’s hoping to globally expand the club’s famous brand.

His success in securing control of the 15-times English champions ends a bitter, two-year battle.

He’s not yet provided details of his plans for United, but he has pledged to stick by the current management team.

But Manchester fans are far from happy with Mr Glazer, who also owns NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

His corporate raid has sparked a defiant outcry from fans, who are threatening to disrupt Saturday's FA Cup Final between United and Arsenal.

"We won't do anything that endangers safety, but they may have to draft in the army to police the match," said Oliver Houston, a vice chairman of Shareholders United.

"We are calling on all supporters to wear black in Cardiff on Saturday," said Mark Longden of the Independent Manchester United Supporters Association.

"If they can get hold of black flags, they should wave them because it represents what is happening to the club."

They claim the new owner has no sentimental attachment to the highly profitable, 127-year-old club and fear he will use its profits in order to repay debts incurred in the takeover bid.

In particular they object to the ₤265m of debt Mr Glazer plans to transfer onto United's balance sheet, and claim he’s planning to sell off the club's 67,000-seat Old Trafford stadium and raise prices.

And in a sporting example of ‘people power’, Manchester fans are being urged to vote with their wallets.

They’re being encouraged not to renew their season tickets, to cancel subscriptions to Manchester United's in-house television station, and boycott the club sponsors Vodafone, Nike, Budweiser and Audi.

The fans are going nuts, from protesting at the FA finals today, against the Arsenals, to "doucing" themselves in beer out of anger.

Chris Rock
(not the exact words cuz i'm recalling from my fallible memory)

"I like one day to be wealthy, not rich, wealthy. i don't want to be rich, i want to be wealthy. But blacks aren't rich and they're certainly not wealthy. Some blacks are rich, but they can never be wealthy. Shaq, b-ball superstar, mvp (most valuable player), millions of dollar per season. Shaq IS rich but he isn't wealthy. The white owner who signs his cheque is WEALTHY. "
