Someone uploaded 45 second sample tracks and I removed them... Here is a little bit of the conversaton, I don't think either of us are correct but what are your oppinions on the situation.

[MESSAGE FROM USER]

Please take the following only as constructive critisism:

I do not understand this abitrary decision surrounding what is and what isn't a demo/sample etc.

It was a very unpleasant surprise when I saw the tracks gone : the fact is I have used your site as a reference. This is unfortunate for the [ rave.ca ] community as well as for me if people are confused.

I personally have worked very hard on these compositions and have past experience concerning being taken advantage through my music. Therefore, I have taken mesures not to freely give out my complete work.

Now I will follow your policy of uploading tracks that are minimum 3 minutes. I am unaware of the comprehensive details of uploading my stuff. As for determining if they are demos / samples / whatever, it is up to your wise and authoritarian judgment to deny me and you publicity or not.

Thank you for taking my outcry seriously and with respect.

[REPLY FROM ME]

The music section is for full tracks only basically and soon will not be for mixes either (some people have uploaded mixes which use a lot of bandwith).

I understand some people getting their tracks ripped off and that is why I suggest not putting all your stuff online but this is not a CD site where people want to listen to 45 second samples to see if they want to buy the vinyl, if you want that then you can easilly have your demos on a site which sells music.

As for everyone else not one other person has uploaded 45 second sample tracks, I don't know why you are so affended that I removed them. People don't wanna listen to a bunch of cut up tracks. Have you ever seen songs on [ MP3.com ] when it existed as a good site with 45 second samples... No because no one would want to download them and add them to their music colleciton.

Maybe we should bring this to the discussion board and see what other people think...

[END]

So what does everyone think about this... Would you consider 45 second samples tracks which should be allowed?

45 second samples tracks are stupid unless you're on a label and have to follow certain copyright laws. Upload the full track or don’t upload it at all.

I think Thog's intentions were to have a section for music, not for samples. To offer something cool for the users and the guests that hit this site.. Im all for not having samples of the songs up on this site..

There are different bitrate's if you don't want to offer full quality to the people. :)

PEACE

yeah, i too agree that partial tracks don't really have a place here-
but is it true that tracks have to be over 3 minutes?? i do many 1 and half to 3 minute songs all the time-- :
(havn't posted many yet, but i planned to put up a couple)

yeah I have at least one track under 3 minutes... I agree that 45 second samples of tracks are kind of lame but it is possible for someone to make a 45 second track (rare) or a 2-3 minutes long one (very common). You'd have to look at it on a case by case basis... But in this case, if a person is uploading a ton of 45 minute samples, I agree it shouldn't be up...

no to the 45 sec previews... but what prevents him from making a 3 minute mp3 of many 45 sec samples?

I think Clown pretty much nailed it.....if u don't wanna get the real thing shared than just upload a lower bitrate file of the track.
