This was the only event I was able to goto for Elektra Fest (the better electronic music festival of Montreal, MUTEK EAT YOUR HEART OUT).

I would've loved to see Kit Clayton, the Juke Bots, the best of Chris Cunningham, and of course, DJ A-Trak, but lifes a bitch with no money and the Alphaville presentation was the only free thing.

Alphaville has a stereotypical anti-utopian storyline. If you've seen Logan's Run, or read 1984, you will know exactly what I'm talking about.

One man hates the ways of a certain society (this society being so perversely run in a strange, logical manner) that he decides to change things. But he has more motivation because he falls in love with a girl who was brought up within the rules of this society.

In this case, the man is Mr. Caution, a spy from the Outlands, sent out to infiltrate Alphaville, a city run by a computer called Alpha 60, developed by Prof. Vanbroam. The entire movie is bad quality black and white, with cheezy fight scenes, a true Film Noir movie, but extremely intelligent in it's portrayal of a society run by technology (technocracy). What made the movie even cooler was the fact that there was a fellow performing the sound track live using modern technocratic sounds. Some of the scenes in the movie just wouldn't of been as powerful if it weren't for the added soundtrack created by Scanner. It was an excellent event, and Elektra v5 will be on my calendar next year. If this year is any idea of what Elektra is all about, then next year I will be prepared and it will be an extremely fun two weekends.

well
I wouldn't know where to find alphaville. This is was a free public viewing of the movie at the Usine C specifically for this festival. But to be honest, I've gotten tired of these types of story lines since they are always the same thing, usually with the exact same outcome.

I would be more interested in a story line which shows how the "distopian" came to be
