YOUR year

95-98

taboo didn't always carry all the shit i wanted to buy

my dad brought a laptop and internet account from work

this was before mp3's and ultrarapid bandwidth so i used to have a tapedeck plugged into the headphone output and make tapes i'd listen to relentlessly until the next weekend we'd have the laptop

there were a few dopeass sites for realaudio including [ undergroundhiphop.com ] and a place called cypherdivine (r.i.p) that had the hottest stuff worldwide... i'd take an hour excatly to download each song... so i was eating up each album i could get my hands on

basement denmark, german hiphop, unheard of montreal stuff and canadian stuff... fondle em records nyc

then i met my soulmates ro from winnipeg, spinfamous from nyc and meano from los angeles

major audio swapping on the internet and mail

good days

the big boy from Disquivel runs shit as distro for indie hiphop already in montreal... although he doesn't cover the full spectrum of things, he's got that artsy and instrumental hiphop stuff on lock and plus he's down anticon and ninja tune. i'm not. he's a fatass also. i'm not. and he's got an inflated head and a small penis. i don't.

Zulu got what the backpackers needs (plus more) and have street credibility... most backpackers only download or buy online... so the small percentage that spin in their bedrooms already go there

and you gave me the lodown on what well established rum&ass record store joining up with another store on the main that sells wack music called house that'll together soon sell hiphop

those guys (if same party are still involved) are down with a dude that does graphic design for rawkus records and got a label called "auditive researching" that are down with a slew of of NYC heads... and they all got one thing in comon... a religion with people that run shit in every trade (almost) imaginable

oh yeah they probably got rich daddies, uncles and grampas

i don't have that financial luxury of having the capital for purchases and facing those harsh 5 first years in business of being broke ass after paying debt, overhead and tofu dogs from lafleur

so here's my business plan
become a fly asian hiphop party promoter
get promos, sell those online and start stacking scrillas

first i have to get really fat, pay people to drive me around on st-catherine and pay flyer boys to work for me in front of the paramount center

and not be cambodian

i'd run a record shop with you Sam,any day. the day i had enough swiss, i'd definetly run a sound emporium

as for my big years in hip-hop

96-99

turntablism grew to new heights

trading tapes overseas and over the internet was my vice for finding new music...my mission, to collect each and every Scratch Tape

tabou didn't have much for me either, except battle records and some oldies

listening to tapes and scribbling down names, introduced me to hip-hop i'd never heard before, and introduced me to the flavor of jazz, blues, funk and motown

hip-hop grew on me like cancer on my white ass

turntables replaced sheep

i got hooked

shit man, i haven't heard that in a long time, i used to have it on tape, gave that to my buddy for some other tapes, but had it recorded on my comp until i lost my turntablism hard drive

i'd love to hear it again, that'd be wild
