An imac 27" is overkill. I sold one to a guy doing professionnal video editing, cuz he wanted to wait for the new mac pro before buying it (go on apple's website and build your own mac pro, you'll understand his move).

Laptop dude, if you can find a laptop that doesn't have built-in wi-fi, you're probably at the wrong store =P

For the PC, if you have very specific needs, build your own from scratch. But since it doesn't seem so, just go out and buy one that is already built, you might save some cash, while still having a good setup. I've been reffered to a place in Mtl, i believe the name is smg tech or something like that (go on google, type "ordinateurs montreal" and it should be in the 1st results). They have the best prices, and you won't have to wait for shipping and shit.

Oh, and for the record, even on devices, there's not much soldering anymore, it's mostly pins. My blackberry's headphone jack is made that way, and from what i heard, it's pretty much the same for all devices these days

So have fun buying your new toy and setting everything =D

basically I just need a motherboard, a CPU and a case. I know enough about the rest to buy them responsibly.

Well then my advice would be to buy an Asus motherboard, a core i5 or i7, and a big ventilated case (heat is always the enemy, so be wise while choosing your case). The integrated video chip on the motherboard will do the job for most applications, but anyway, if ever you intend on buying a video card (let's say, to play some video games and plug it on your hdtv via HDMI), you can install it afterwards. I've heard that ATI is the only one supporting sound and video through HDMI, but other manufacturers might have updated their product lately. There will be an hdmi built-in on the motherboard you'll buy, but it might not give you the ability to display in 1080P. And if it does, it's still not the best. A built in video card is made to be plugged with a regular computer screen, not an hdtv ;)

[ www.sgxtech.com ] ?
I've been buying only from [ sigmawave.com ] for 2 years, they always had the best prices I found, similar to [ tigerdirect.ca ]
Their shop is on Parc (west side), just between Sherbrooke and Milton, I think.
Service is not great, they have to order most of the things, but their web catalog stays up-to-date and their prices are the best (at least, among the best).

unless you don't care about money so don't care to buy a new part should your old not fit anymore, buying from a company that offer sufficient support thus will update its drivers for a while.

Hot swap drawers.
They exist. Not that xpensive actually.
Too bad, I just got rid of a casing with two of those built in.
Mind you they were IDE, but I'm pretty shure you can get them for sata.

yeah it's not something that's usually built into a case, it's something you can get that goes in a 5 1/4" drive. just get a case with lots of those.

something like this.. the thermaltake one can handle both sizes also.. 2.5 and 3.5
you don't want to leave a drive like that all the time but it's great for troubleshooting and so on.
