It's a proven fact that there are an infinite amount of 0's in any given number since it is nothing and there is an infinite amount of nothing. Division is either the dividing of a number into a certain number of peices to find out how much each peice equals or the division of a number into a certain amount of peices to find out how many occurances of that number there are in it. When using whole numbers it's both and it doesn't matter, the only time these two things conflict with eachother is with 0. But if one were to take division literally as "to divide", we would be literally dividing into a certain number of peices which would mean not dividing it into peices at all, making it the same. The idea that it equals infinity is based on the idea of division being a way to count the occurences of a given number within another. Normally it doesn't matter which definition we chose but in the case of zero it's a matter of chosing one definition for division or the other. What it equals depends on what you're doing to it. In school I seem to rememebr that if we had 1/0 we were supposed to consider this as 1 not infinity. |
