EQing just refers to any adjustment you may make to the hi/mid/low frequencies using the knobs above the volume fader of each channels on the mixer.
This idj site I referenced earlier actually has a lot of really nice dj tutorials from the pros. check it out

I tried it out last night,

This is my first time participating in an online discussion concerning the finer points of technic -that-is-tek9....(skillz) so go easy and be gentel on me...

I think i agree with scott p that you really can't have both basses blarring for an extended period of over dub, but you can have it as a short duration distortion 'fuck your head up' thing, like the wammy bar or the distortion pedal on an electric guitar, you can also use it in transitional ways before a mojor cut in one of your tracks like last 4-8 beats you crank this retarded diassociative molases crap out the speaker and bang, your track changes up, What i certainly think you can't do is have two tracks spitting out overdubed double base for a straight 64 beats it's just too much nausea...I just can't believe that i never realized this before i feel sort of stupid to be honest...

I am still having alot of trouble with using the fader and the levels to cut in and out and back and forth to the beat. Any suggestions.

try not using the fader but the volume sliders instead.. i havnt touched the fader in years'n years..

fast fader work requires a lot of practice and a very good knowledge of the rhythems in the songs you are dealing with

you have alot more control with the volume faders and gain knobs than the cross fader.

cross faders don't control volume very well as they are made for scratching and trick mixing.

you may wanna try bringing your tracks in more gradualy...

that way you have a better idea of how loud its gunna sound when the slider is at the top so you can adjust your volume acordingly.

flicking the crossfader (especially with a square curve) can be like playing russian rulette.

it can also be helpful to keep a hand close to the gain when you cut a track. that way if you do make a mistake you can cover it up before anyone notices.

I agree with murdock rock, unless you're scratching or doing special tricks, the crossfader is a very random way of mixing. The volume faders give you much more control.

i use the levels to bring the track in for sure, but i'm taking about while the two tracks are playing in flux with each other...cutting back and forth with the fadder is just so rewarding...it really hits the spot.

And what about using the kills?...

Lately I try to avoid it, to concentrate on the EQ and I realised it helps getting smoother transitions.

I'm also inquiring about the difference between the fader volume and the gain. I'm under the impression that playing with the gain can conserve the general volume, but I'd like to know if there is something more to it.

personaly i HATE kill switches...

its partially because i rarely kill a frequency 100% and partially because i'm totally spasticated and hit em more by accident than intentionaly.

and in response to melodies cut question...

usually phrases break down into 64 bar chunks, and with most electronic music there is a variation every 4-8 bars with bigger variations at 16, 32 and eventually at 64 you get a break and in most cases thats where you wanna cut with most electronic music.

sometime its fun to cut out the last bar of a phrase and then bring it back in....

ya i know one, on some mixers if you pound back and forth between 'flanger' and 'pan right/left' you can get this weird grind sound going i can't really explain it its like recycled negative feed (if you understand what i m saying..) and it can be really cool if you use it right.

I got into electronic music years ago in part due to the lack of vocals.. guess I just couldnt take the cheese anymore :P. Recently Ive grown a taste for artists integrating vocals into tracks. Although many dont pull this off successfully, I think theres still alot of unexplored potential there for sure. I have on occation in the past seen djs mix select vocal samples into their tracks to turn their simple dj set into more of a flowing story telling session. I mixed a demo a few years ago using a bunch of samples I cut from the movie Dune, it was a fun project, never had the ballz to perform it in a party though...maybe if I used an extra cdj or something. Id definately like to see other djs give it shot in future though, it makes a mix more interesting especially if you think you know the tracks already.
