Why is everyone on TV picking on Winnipeg? SO WHAT'S SO FUNNY ABOUT WINNIPEG?...There was a time when, if comedy writers needed a Canadian place-name to get a giggle, they'd pick Moose Jaw or Medicine Hat or maybe even Flin Flon. But of late, it seems that American TV writers treat Winnipeg, of all places, as the next best thing to a whoopee cushion. Last month, David Letterman's writers suggested an interesting location for a new reality TV episode. Survivor: Winnipeg. Just last week, the West Wing made a derisive diatribe about the game of hockey using - here we go again - Winnipeg in the process. But this downhill snowball of slander about Winnipeg began long before Letterman. Maybe it started when David Steinberg was directing Mad About You and the writers decided to give him and his home town an off-handed slap at the chops. It was a putdown line - "You must be from Winnipeg." Maybe it began with The Simpsons episode when an exasperated car-touring-dad announces: "That's it! We're going back to Winnipeg." Which probably evolved into the TV commercial where the geeky Goodyear guy with the plane ticket for Hawaii discovers in flight that he's chosen the wrong gate. "Goin' to Winnipeg." As I was saying, I'm not sure why Winnipeg is suddenly such a recurring target of American television writers, unless, of course it's all those Canadian writers down there having their funny way with us. Free Press TV writer Brad Oswald probably has the most likely, if uncomfortable, answer to why it's so cool to make fun of us. "We're a cold, remote place with a funny sounding name." YAY winnipeg rules!... *cough cough* |
