| I left my computer on before going out last night, while out there was a power outage and when I came home the computer was off... when I turned it back on everything lit up like normal, drives, lights, monitors etc... but it freezes at the first screen (asus motherboard blah blah) and wont load any further... any ideas out there before I go spend a mint at the tech shop?.. any help would be really appreciated. thanks -K |

| try to unplug every power cables and to switch off the power switch behind the computer (if there's one) and then wait for 1 minute ; then replug and test.
if it doesn't work, you should go into the bios and check whether the hdds are properly recognized ; if you can't even go into the bios, you should try to remove the little batteries on the motherboard for a few seconds (and then put it back and test again).
also, check the last lines/messages on your screen that freezes... i guess they should help to know where the problem comes from |

| After trying all night yesterday and all morning... dismantling the whole machine cleaning it, changing cables, removing the battery etc... it still wouldnt boot up. I followed flo's advice about checking the last command line in the bios before it froze up turns out the solution was as simple as unplugging my external usb drive and powering up. Even when I plugged the drive in after a succesful boot into windows it froze up the machine for the first few times and then for no apparant reason it just started working... everythings fine now, Ive re-booted a few times since with no issues, but man that was fucking strange. I really dont understand Pc's sometimes. |

| power problems often cause capacitors malfunctions... as it is a rather analogous than digital component, it can remain in an erratic state... unplugging/replugging helps emptying such capacitors and then putting back the hardware in a normal state.
sometimes the unplugging causes a little more elaborate reset, which might have been the case with an usb external drive (probably without capacitors... i have no clue) |

| have you recently installed any new gear? could be a problem with the power supply, and the USB drive obviously uses power... sometimes unplugging an unused 56k modem solves a whole list of unexplained problems. besides, it's always smart to plug in external devices after the computer boots up |

| Well I replaced the power supply just last week.. and added a wireless card. rebooted a few times since with no issues. Theres no way in hell I'm going to unplug-replug all my devices before booting up everytime.. never had to before.. aint going to start now. Either way everythings fine now. |

| honestly man if you just replaced your power supply, there's a very good chance it's either defective, or not good enough for your comp. I knew this dude a while back who replaced his power supply roughly 6 times before it fused his motherboard to some other component. Lesson was NEVER skimp on a power supply, it's the heart of the computer and if it's faulty, it can take every with it when it goes wonky. just some info... if you're having no problems now I wouldn't worry about it, just don't throw away the warranty. |
