EMERY BROKE CANADA'S LAWS, TOO

Re: `Prince of Pot' ready for martyrdom in marijuana cause, April 29.

To think that Mark Emery is a significant threat to the United States
and that its request for Emery to be extradited to face drug charges
is not politically motivated is laughable.It seems Emery broke
Canadian laws, too, but Canada's justice department, up to this point
at least, has not been on an anti-marijuana crusade with the zeal of
the Americans.

Now that Canada has taken a turn to the right and in order to mend
broken fences and demonstrate their new get-tough approach, I fear
the Conservatives will be much more compliant to the U.S. request. To
grant such a request denies Canada its sovereignty and forces Canada
to meekly follow the U.S. in its failed war on drugs. It may very
well backfire for the U.S. if the case becomes high profile. Is the
U.S. willing to gamble it won't be furthering Emery's cause by
creating a martyr?
