DRUGS ARE RIFE IN CHORLEY

Residents in Chorley are calling for a crackdown on drug dealers operating
in their neighbourhood.

People living in the Gillibrand area say criminals are openly pedalling
drugs in various locations in their close-knit community leading to fears
for the safety of local children.

One mum-of-three, who didn't want to be named for fear of reprisals, said
she has seen the dealers conducting their illegal activities in broad
daylight at the phone box in front of the Trinity Church, in Devonshire
Road, on a number of occasions.

She said: "Drugs are absolutely rife around here and nobody seems to be
doing anything about it.

"If I know what's going on, and I don't have any training, then why don't
the police do something about it?

"People have lived around here for a long time and we shouldn't have to
watch it go down the pan because of a bunch of druggies."

Coun Ralph Snape, who represents the area, said he was aware of the
problems but defended the police saying they have made drugs a major
priority in the area.

He said: "Drugs have been an issue in Chorley for a long time but it is a
very difficult situation to tackle.

"Once you solve the problem in one area, you move it on to another. The
problem we are seeing is that at the moment the problem is here but we are
working closely with the police through the PACT meetings and it is a main
priority."

The well-known councillor believes more needs to be done to tackle the
problem at the source before it gets to Chorley.

PCSO Stephanie Morley, whose beat covers the area, said: "We are aware of
the problem and are monitoring it closely.

"It has been highlighted at recent PACT meetings and by some local residents.

"It is an ongoing problem and we are carrying out extra patrols in the
area. If anyone has information or sees anything suspicious we urge them
to contact us at the neighbourhood policing office at Chorley on 01257

"We will deal with all calls as a priority and anonymity is always
protected."
