PRISON INMATES TEST POSITIVE FOR POT

Morgan --- Twenty-five inmates at the Calhoun State Prison tested positive
for marijuana, officials said Monday.

The Georgia Department of Corrections is investigating how the inmates got
the marijuana. Department spokeswoman Scheree Lipscomb said it was very
unusual for so many to test positive.

''At this time we are not really sure how this was brought in,'' she said.

The inmates may have picked it up outside the prison while serving on work
details, or they may have smuggled it in, she said.

''That's why we're so tight on security,'' Lipscomb said. ''We always have
people trying to introduce contraband into the prison system.''

The prison, located about 25 miles east of Albany in the southwest Georgia
town of Morgan, is classified as a closed-security prison, with 1,222
inmates, Lipscomb said.

Inmates range from murderers serving life to thieves serving lesser sentences.
