whhhhoooAAAA speeeedy gonzalez!!! the party is in like 33 days amigo! but just for good measure here's a little blurb about Black Market, as he attempts to explain what the hell he's all about:

BLACK MARKET

"I play the bass and make tunes on the computer. I like to make things that have a bit of balls to them. I studied music technology and got a masters in it, and I have a degree in physics as well. I like Heineken. This is just me, unlike my other "projects" (so pretentious) where i work with other people (see Dr Noh and dB). Hence, this is pure and unfilitered, what I want to hear. Its faster than dB, harsher than Dr Noh, its all 180 bpm, and the beats don't just loop, ever. Thats all I can say without sounding like a cunt."

ps check out [ www.flatwax.com ] to snag some Black Market's mp3's... last week WikkiD records released his "Chimera" and "Flutes" tracks on their Something Wikkid this Way Drumz LP...

once again, I think it would be appropriate to quote the holy prophets right about now:

"Only 24 hours in a day
Only 12 notes a man can play
Music for all and not just one people
And now we're gonna bust with the Putney Swope sequel
More Adidas sneakers that a plumber got pliers
Got more suits that Jacoby & Meyers
If not for my vices my bugged out desires
I mix business with pleasure way too much
I mean wine and women and song and such
Steal from the rich and I'm out robbing banks
Give to the poor and I always give thanks
Got more stories that J.D. Salinger
I hold the title and you are the challenger
I've got money like Charles Dickens
Got the girlies in the Couple like the Colonel's got the chickens
Always go out dapper like Harry S. Truman
I'm madder than Mad's Alfred E. Newman
*Never gonna let them say that I don't love you*"

[NTER] level 4 productions, [ bpm-radio.com ] control f, HyPo crew

"It's like if four of us are sitting around talking, you know, French, and another guy starts talking Chinese. You look at that guy and you say 'what's wrong with that guy?' It's like, oh, he's talking Chinese." Nter was initiated into the squad following a series of successful collaborations between himself and his previous promotion crews and the Level 4 family. As a key element of the Coloured Coordinators, Nter played a huge role in organizing underground fund-raising events including Dendrophilia, where we first met him, or Hooked, not only supporting the city's best artists but also donating all of his profits to worthy charities in the city. Working with Montreal's BPM-Radio team, Nter continued to represent the sound and ideology of Level 4 Productions. When L4P and Nter teamed up to throw the infamous Turkeybreast event one fateful Thanksgiving, it became obvious that this inspired oddball was indeed worthy of inclusion in the clan. Now completely drawn into the sounds of driving mammothian tek, Nter is aggressive, erratic and overzealous both as a DJ, producer and promoter, a tireless devotee to Level 4's cause... though sometimes he must be muzzled or subdued to prevent fatal damages to his immediate surroundings.

and yes.. I do love sasha and digweed. i was converted to them very late in life, thinking for a decade or so that they were ultra gay and cheesy, just 'cause they're so popular, and having never given them a chance. now i think they are both ill... their shit is great when you're in the right mood, they have maaad skills on the decks, and perhaps most importantly they have this super-distinct sound when they play.. something to do with perfectly dealing with EQs and having the most subby, chugging bass-scape..

[Fishead] [ fishead.gabber.org ]
"Before his eyes a kaleidoscopic range of fantasmal images played, all of them dissolving at intervals into the picture of a vast, unplumbed abyss of night wherein whirled suns and worlds of an even profounder blackness. He thought of the ancient legends of Ultimate Chaos, at whose center sprawls the blind idiot god Azathoth, Lord Of All Things, encircled by his flopping horde of mindless and amorphous dancers..." -H.P.Lovecraft

It may be fiction, but in some ways Lovecraft's ominous Haunter Of The Dark really does exist. The words conjure up a vision of a dark warehouse where a lone figure conducts the movements of the horde. This figure isn't the blind idiot god of lore, but rather a DJ who mimics that essence behind an altar adorned with turntables: presiding over the madness and deciphering the codes hidden in the grooves. The decoded message is then amplified through speakers and the sonic tentacles draw out your pain through the ecstasy of movement. You are made a slave to the beat, marching to the drum of a sinister power. Zombified by the aneurythms of tech-step, the entropy of speedcore and the pure abyss of noise.

This is the unique experience promised by one of Canada's most respected DJs in the hardcore genre: Fishead.

In just a few short years he has managed to build a reputation that far exceeds his Winnipeg roots. He's been booked coast to coast across North America and, in the process, has built up an impressive resume that includes gigs for some of the continent's most respected promoters and praise from many of his peers. As well as being considered an influence behind the decks, he has also helped to give the underground a strong voice with his written contributions to a variety of electronic music magazines including Skreem, Activated, Deadly Type and a long standing relationship with Massive.

This, however, only covers one facet of what he does. In addition to the Fishead pseudonym he also plays techno as C-Horse, drum & bass as Piranha and has produced noise music as The Bastard God. Any of these 'personalities' can manifest itself at any point during a set. It's not uncommon for pounding kick drums to sneak into a Piranha set, nor is it odd for a techno set to mutate into hardcore or jungle or both. There is no set list, no rehearsal, no specific way to play any given record. It's all about spontaneous creation.

He credits a number of DJs for pushing him in this direction, and the only thing that they really have in common is a willingness to try something new. His influences span many genres and include performers like Titonton, Terrence Parker, Dan Doormouse, Richie Hawtin, Claude Young and a large number of turntablists. "Those are the DJs who will surprise you by doing the most bizarre shit," he says. "They'll play records backwards by hand, scratch, juggle beats... in short, they'll do whatever it takes to knock things off balance and keep them teetering on the cutting edge. When I hear from someone who thinks about me that way, then I know I've done my job."

here's the complete transcript of Steve Lalls' interview with world's no. 5 DJ Armin Van Buuren... article appears in April 17 edition of the Hour... [ www.hour.ca ] big up the Hour. (** indicates Steve's questions, comments)

**Impressions of Montreal?

It’s a very trendy town, lots of nice clubs, bars and restaurants. Many people I meet from all over the world talk about Montreal as being at the forefront of club culture. It’s not just cause you work for the newspaper there that I say this, it’s something that really struck me. It’s a really healthy scene in Montreal. If you look at the list of people that come there often it’s really impressive; it looks like Montreal is one of the best cities to go to in the world. Let me tell you one thing: the scene in Montreal must be better than it is here in Holland!

**In Holland?

The club scene is dead, the large raves are still happening

**What do you know about bal en blanc?

My manager told me i have to bring white clothes. Hahah. It’s some sort of trademark of mine anyways! But no, i have a clothing sponsor who has a lot of wqhite clothing, and we did a Sensation white party here last here with 45 000 people in a stadium in Amsterdam, that was pretty amazing, two events: one the white edition and one the balck. It can be very special when everyone is playing white. I heard bal en blanc is in a stadium, it’s really special and a once in a life opportunity.

**You’re on a tour?

It;’s Toronto on Thursday, government, Friday is Vancouver, at Simple Fix, plaza of the nations, and Sunday Bal en Blanc.

**Would you call your music ‘trance’?

I would call it dance music and i;’ll tell you why. For you to call it trance is fine. I dont want to cause the word has a bad name, and on the other hand I play a style of music that was totally different six years ago. Back in the beginning of the 90’s it was house music, and then it was called goa, and then hardcore, and now trance all of a sudden. I have a lot of discussions with people that say trance, or progressive. I dont think trance is a dirty word. It’s very difficult to answer these questions about what style you’re playing. The trance genre is so big, you have the popular, commercial trance whatever is high in the charts, which is definitely not what i’m playing and they give trance a bad name. And i respect those people, it’s just NOT trance. There is a music called trance back in 98 a small amount of records. We could go on about this for hours and hours.

**Do you use turntables? CDs? Final Scratch? And stuff.

Unfortunately yes... Nothing will beat the sound of vinyl, even if the actual frequency response of CDs is better, there’s something about vinyl that cannot be duplicated, maybe that’s just something personal. But with the music business nowadays, you have to play CDs. A lot of producers send me their productions directly, on CDR and I used to traverl with one or two CDs now I bring a whole case. I hate it but it’s inevitable if you wanna hear the newest productions. Unfortunately, it’s inevitable. I use a lot of CDs, make special edits, that’s a good thing, you can be creative. Final Scartch is Not the real thing foer me, its far too complicated. Its a ncie system, very intelligent, but it’s a big hassle to actually get it going, and its just not stable enough. It’s mostly about the tracks, putting the records on that will give you that nice stadium feeling. But I don’t play techno. I play more melodic music

I’m really looking forward to the gig, and i will do my best to be prepared. I’m still really bad in french...

**Don’t worry it’s a very bilingual city.

**What about upcoming projects?

Ya, that’s quite a big story actually. The 3rd of June i release my first artist album, on United Recordings’ Armind label, and I’ve started my own record company as well, but that’s something for the future. Armind is managed by me, but was handled and marketed by United, and that’s what I will do on my own now. I’m really proud of the album, I’ve worked for a year on it. The first single has been signed to over 10 countries, a collaboration with former Genesis singer Ray Wilson, anf there’s a huge amoun tof vocal tracks and some non vocal tracks on it also. A bit of a pop album but also very trancey. It comes out in the first place on CD and then vinyl releaes, extended versions and stuff like that. My own label will be called Armada, we’re just setting it up, I can’t really tell too much about. It. I’ve been focussing on this album, and I’m doing that with Armind and United so...

I really enjoyed myself in Israel, i also had a fantastic tiem last tnime i was in canada, at aria and ath the guvernment, it was really amazing, terrific crowds, i will never forget that. Also had a really good time in Autstalia.

There was never a plan, i never started and said ‘I want to to be number one’. It’s something i love to do, and the crowds have gotteen bigger but i hope i dont change. It’s more than just liking music, it’s really a passion, and it’s a big honor if people come to listen to you. And I think it’s a big responsibility: that’s why I think i got so far, by taking people seriously who have paid to come out for a party. They’ve worked all week and spend their money to come out so i try, even though i can’t please everyone, i try to make everyone happy. People look forward to going out and enjoying themselves, and that’s what i try to do for them.

never published since his show was cancelled. EXCLUSIVE SHIT. the Hacker was NOT very talkative.

(* denotes steve lalla's question)

*You've gained renown as both a techno and electro producer, what can we expect to hear in your DJ set?

techno & electro

*Many of your productions incorporate samples of earlier recordings. Is it difficult to license these samples?

which records are you talking about ? on my whole productions i think i used 2 or 3 samples (and it was noises or rythm elements), using loops from other people is not my policy, so i don't have problems with licensing

*Do you feel that sample-based music is linked to DJing, and playing the music of other people?

it could be, but there is so many ways to use a sample

*Do you consider yourself first and foremost an artist, or an entertainer?

i don't want to sound too pretentious , but i prefer to be considered as an artist

*What type of set-up do you use? standard two turntables? Do you employ any samplers, final scratch or anything?

standard set up

*Do you also play live shows ever?

we used to with miss kittin, but not any more

*You played in Montreal with Miss Kittin at the SAT. Any impressions of our city's scene? People?

we had a very good experience, people were really nice with us, this show in montreal was one of the highlights of the tour.

*Through your work with Miss Kittin you not only became well-known, but also become associated with the "electro-clash" movement.. how do you feel about this? do you consider yourself a proponent of electroclash?

i don't know and i don't really care, "electroclash "is just a word overhyped by the media to put a lot of artist in the same basket, i think at the beguining this word was cool but now, it doesn't mean anything

*How old are you? When did you first become involved in electronic music, and how?

i'm 30, i started when i was 17 in a knid of new wave band, we sounded like a bad imitation of DAF

*Where do you see the future of vinyl, and the electronic music scene in general?

difficult, for the vinyl , i'm quite pessimist with this "final scratch" thing anf for the whole scene, i think it's going pretty well, time will tell...

*Tell me about your current and upcoming projects?

a new 12" on turbo (from montreal !!), and after that i will start to work on my next solo album for 2004 on my own label called "goodlife"

Kemek plays at Borken / Saphir April 16th

here is the full transcript of interview with him... partially appeared in Lallaland published april 10th / [ www.hour.ca ] / thanks to the Hour

(*=Steve Lalla's question)

*You've started a second label? Roke Records?
Is that running smoothly? Anticipated street date still May 1st?

Yes, it's taken us awhile to get things off the ground but it's up and
running and we're on point for a May 1 release of our first release, Kemek
the Dope Computer: "Future Modular Remixes." It's remixes of my first breaks
release, "Future Modular." Remixes by myself, Loes Lee (of Moving Target),
and Digital Rust (KWS Records).

*Why did you start a second label?

Dope Computer Records, my first label, was basically a wish-fulfillment
thing for me. I'd always wanted to do my own label, and since other labels
didn't seem interested in my music, it seemed like the only way things would
get going was if I did it myself. So I did the one record and promptly ran
out of money. It did the trick because other labels came calling, but
there's something uniquely satisfying about running your own label. So I
talked to (LA promoter and DJ) Robtronik about getting together to start a
new label. Seeing as it would be a partnership, the name would have to
change to something else.

*Is the word 'Roke' some sort of twisted amalgamation of the words
'Robtronik' and 'Kemek'?

Why yes, it is.

*Does Roke have a specific purpose?

To release great breaks music. We're big supporters of the North American
scene but we won't limit ourselves to it either. Basically if both Rob and I
would play it, it could be a Roke release.

*I was gonna ask if you have a day job S it appears that you work at Honda.

Actually I'm the assistant managing editor on two magazines, Car Audio and
Electronics and Honda Tuning. No, I don't know crap about cars or stereos. I
do know about words and grammar and such, and that's what I do: correct
stories for publication.

*Your site seems fairly well-maintained, and it's obvious that you get quite
a lot of production done. Do you consider yourself a workaholic? Devoted to
breaks?

I don't consider myself a workaholic, because that denotes some sort of
neurosis. I'm happiest making music and DJing, so I try to do it as much as
possible. That being said, I can tend to disappear into my studio for days
on end, so I have to find the balance between being social and being
solitary. But that's just how I am !!!

Here's a WICKED game. If we're in our car, we're all playing it all the time, without even realizing it. Like the Matrix or some shit. It's the driving game: (sorry, but this game is really offensive to pretty much EVERYONE. but I didn't make the rules here, I'm just explaining how it works)
Running over a policeman= 50 points
Running over a squeegee punk= 40 points
Running over a roller-blader= 35 points
Running over a senior citizen= 30 points
Running over a child= 20 points
Running over a screaming child= 25 points
Running over a child wearing fluorescent clothing=25 points
Running over a dog= 15 points
Running over a lapdog (includes all portable dogs such as chihuahas, miniature poodles, etc.)=20 points
Running over a politician= 45 points
Running over a handicapped person= 30 points
Running over a handicapped person who is wearing fluorescent clothing or an article of fluorescent material= 35 points
Running over a roller blade who is wearing shoulder pads=40 points (add 5 points if s/he is wearing a helmet; another 5 for fluorescent clothing)
Running over somebody on a bike=15 points
Running over somebody on a bike wearing an article of fluorescent material=20 points
Running over somebody on a bike who is wearing a helmet= 25 points
Running over somebody on a bike wearing an article of fluorescent material AND a helmet=35 points
Running over a screaming child on a bike who is wearing an article of fluorescent material AND a helmet=40 points
Running over a mentally-retarded child who is roller-blading while wearing fluorescent clothing and wearing shoulder-pads (55 points -add 5 if s/he is screaming at the time)
Coming to a complete stop= MINUS 5 points

there's a few more of those also... it's so hard to remember them all. Post 'em if you can, it'll help us all out. Anyways, I'm at like 155 points I think, but then again I don't really play hard. 'Cause like, if you die then you lose. Maaan, I know people who are in the quadruple digits and shiiiiiit. It's a dangerous game.
