by DJ sarcastic.

i used to think techno was IT. no words, no samples, no music.

now i'm not so sure.
ya, i still love good tek, but i know that i'd rather hear Pink Floyd the Wall on Aria's sound system than, say, the new marco carola on zenit. hell i dont even listen to carola records in the store anymore -i used to buy 'em without listening to 'em, now i dont buy em and dont listen to 'em. i know exactly what they're gonna sound like anyways.

thing is, if i was DJing at Aria, i'd be much happier playing techno than Pink Floyd. sometimes i think techno is just made for DJs, cause its so fun to mix.

on the other hand though, if i was strung on e and speed and on the dancefloor (haha unlikely but possible, and a likely scenario for many clubgoers) i would also be happier hearing tek than pink floyd.

when i go vinyl shopping now, compared to 2 or 3 years ago, i buy so many different styles its insane. but 5 6 years ago, when i discovered tek, i wouldnt have bought ANYTHING out of the techno section. when you have tek, you build around it as a DJ, with more and more tek, cause all tek sounds good with other tek.. sounds bad with acid, bad with house/ prog trance, but good with full on tek.. sometimes you find a borderline track that works. now that i play retarded diverse sets occasionally, i've realized this. rarely will a ben sims track, or a glenn wilson track, find itself into a tweaked out acid/ booty/ old school mix for example. (although acid, booty, old school -or minimal tech, tech-house, breaks, electro, even hardcore -will all go together nicely)...

wtf is up with that?
why do people actually like to dance to techno? someone who ISNT a DJ please answer me that? arent you all just mindless drones who eat whatever you are served? why is tek still out there? or is it dead? is it just DJs producers and labels keeping it alive, the last remnants?

because hey, free dummy.

simple....because it's repetitive and tribal.....ask the african tribers....and the fact that it's faster paced....enough....it keeps young people feeling alive....unlike prog which makes you feel like you're 45 and still trying to relate to your rave son or wtv......it makes complete sense and it's pretty elementary to me....

and when you say Techno=no music....I think you mean no melody.....that makes more sense....

hey soyfunk... all I can say is that I never looked at electronic music the same way after doing pillz... I don't think it's the only way to understand electronic music, but it definately helps... I dunno, thats just my opinion anyways, I don't think it applies to everyone, thats a little too broad, I wish I could put my finger on what it was that openned my eyes/ears/life to electronic music, but all I can honestyl make as a connection would be the drugs...

Ufot-going to lala-land?

I haven't taken a pill in over ten years... and I hadn't taken anything when I got turned onto techno in '90. It's never been about drugs for me. It's been about discovery...
and as far as mixing goes - just about anything can be done. I learned the rules - and now I'm trying to break them... all of them.

I'm not unaware of it at all, unlike what you might think....I just thought that by "no music" he was referring to you know?....that boring kind....that's all.......I was just really trying to make sense out of what he wrote.......maybe he didn't mean that and if he didn't then that leaves me without an aswer.....what did he mean by "no music"?........maybe he's just trying to mess with my/our head(s).....and calling something boring is very subjective btw....anyways, that's another story....but yeah....what do you think he meant by "no [ ..com ] to think of it, it doesn't make much sense at all and I guess I was a fool to assume I understood......

"no words, no samples, no music" = this is actually just a bit from a spool record i have, thought it adequately summed up the appeal of techno to me. yes there is melodic techno. i try to avoid it (but fail -all sound is inherently melodic).. and joel mull for example, master of melody imo, is one of my all time fave producers of ANY kind of music.

i'd like to think speed has nothing to do with this, seeing as i've only done it once on purpose, and (as everyone does) a few times incidentally i'm sure when doing unclean e about 6 or 7 years ago... and carlos, if doing e once in four years means i "do ecstasy" then sure, but i mean, come on. sure i've done drugs but i've gone thru being both a heavy drug user and a not-so-heavy drug user... now that i think of it, in fact, i'm sure this has strongly effected my musical tastes. the more that my drug intake is concentrated around say alcohol, the more i get into booty... i still have huge deep tek binges that occur months removed from any sort of intake of any drug (other than alcohol) even weed mind you... hmmm... maybe it's completely coincidental -definitely no real substantial evidence either way, but drugs may be a factor.

from the results of this thread, it may be a working assumption to conclude that you have to "have DONE speed to appreciate techno"... even once... th amount that you do it is irrelevant. acid, mush, e, meth, coke, these may all do the job also. meth and coke i dont know about so much... but i liked techno before i ever did pills (back in the blotter days blaaargh)... anyways, the last thing i wanted was for this to turn into a discussion about fucking drugs. does it all come down to that? i refuse to believe its so simple.

HERE HERE
colin and I are birds of a feather you dont need any extra substances to understand any thing at all... mind expansion does not need a crutch to help it on its way...
and the quick fix of substances only cloud the experience in an empty false sense of reality...

to me no music is stuff like merzbow or massonna
all that japan noise stuff... but then again the term no music is as subjective as saying some thing is boring...
