"Please honor this day and obstain from buying anything for a full 24-hour period. Yes that means even gas :P and even food, and even medicine. Please spread the word about Buy Nothing Day to others, so that we may all band together and stand against corporations, if only for a day. We'll show them that we arent always under their control, BE AFRAID corporations...be very afraid, the people will revolt!" - My dear friend, Lauren, she couldnt have said it better..

I am actually very oposed to buy nothing day....I can see not buying anything from major corporations..but for example the store I work in (a small boutique which is not part of a chain, and where the owner actually works IN the store) can be severaly hurt by people NOT buying anything for a day, other small buisnesses can also be hurt by an extreme lack of sales even if its just one day...whereas the big corporations have enough money and can afford people not shopping for a day and it wont hurt them at all....so basically this day is a nussance to large corporations and can hurt the small buisnesses in our communities..alot of good that does guys...this just makes small buisnesses weak...so in comparison the corporations and large chains are stronger...anyways just my 2 cents.

hurt= physically, psychologically or emotionally?

hurt because less people will buy the stuff you make profit with for a day?

poor, poor, poor store owner. if it takes as little as this to make you hurt, just imagine how dependant you are to your buisness.

maybe you should go on a vacation.

no really though...(not speaking about my work but) alot of small busnesses cant afford to have a day without any sales because it can bring the account balance too low and it can cause troubles paying bills etc. I can understand the concept these people are going for...but im just saying that its not gonna hurt the corporations..its gonna hurt the small businesses...and whats the fucking point of that? like what do they think this buy nothing day is gonna do to big corporations? it wont do shit. they dont care. the stores that do care are the small ones...and if i understand correctly these arent the businesses this day is meant to target.

anyways it doesnt actually matter...because very few people actually participate anyways. I will participate in the way of not buying shit from corporations..but I will definatly not buy anything less from the other places i buy things at.

I just felt like pointing out the flaws in what they are trying to do because I think its a good idea but is being gone about in all the wrong ways.

Buy nothing day is the absolute stupidest concept ever.

It alsways bugs me how people take for granted what type of a world they live in (canada) and how good they have things. You know what we owe a lot of this to? Industrialization, corporations, free markets, etc.

So many people protest without having a clue what the hell you are protesting. Oh and geuss what. What do you think gives you the freedom to protest?

I think on buy nothing day, I am going to go on a shopping spree.

I don't believe in buy nothing day..

It should be called "buy nothing from large multinational corporation day", and that should be every day.

I support the small businessman.

i think its a good idea, not because its gonna really hurt corporations, but because buying nothing for 24hrs will make people more conscience of just how consumerist our society is

IMHO, I think its a bad idea.

Its for wannabe activitsts who can't stick to a cause. The day after, you'll be back at the same shops, buying the same stuff. The ones that are hurt are the smaller owned businesses, as Billy said. One day of very low sales means they might not be able to pay their employees if the budget is tight, or something along those lines.

If you want to stop corporate America, Canada, Russia, whatever; then boycott the companies that you don't agree with. Stop shopping at the Gap, don't buy cds from music companies raise prices with mp3 sharing as a scapegoat, ect.

You won't make the slightest dent just doing this with corporations. You will make the difference with the smaller places fighting to represent themselves in a money fueled society.

Think about it before you hop on a bandwagon which makes no sense.
