Yesterday I saw this film at the Cinema du Parc and was in absolute awe at was perhaps the most realistic, beleivable, and shocking portrayal of teenage high school life that I have ever seen.
The movie is inspired by the Columbine high school shootings, but rather then dwell on or try to explain the motivation of the shooters, the movie simply puts the shootings back into their proper context of a deeply troubled reality, not just for the shooters but for all of the teenage characters. The movie takes place over one day, alternating between several storylines involving a number of teens, and moving back and forth in time. It makes use of unusual camera techniques that allow for very effective subjective storytelling. As the plot focuses on one character at a time, the director plunges the viewer into the headspace of that particular character. When the climax of the film, the shooting, arrives, it feels like less of a surprise and more like the most extreme of a long sequence of twisted realities. So I highly recommend you see this movie, its truly an exeptional work of art. |
