i'm not a message board kinda person, and i don't think i ever posted here but i thought i'd share this little story with you guys...

saturday night i went skateboarding in the old port and i picked up 2 french girls who were sightseeing there. we spent the night walking around, showed em some stuff, told em a bit about montreal and shit. around midnight they left for their hotel and they asked if i wanted to bring them to the tam-tams the next day. i said ok.

sunday we were just chilling in the grass, talking, comparing cultures and stuff. then one of the girls asked me about nightclubs. i told her i didn't like clubbing cause the music and the people usually sucked. i said i used to go to raves a while back but stopped going cause the scene and people in general degraded to a point where parties became glorified high-school dances.

i said that the parties nowadays were all in the same few shitty places, or even if it was different it'd look and feel the same as the previous shitty place there was a party at. i said that a HUGE party was 500 people. that we had like maybe 25 local DJs and 10 DJs from out of town that spin in montreal and that the party is only different in the selection out of those 35 DJs and sometimes just in the order in which they spin.

then she said that in France it wasn't like that, she said raves in France were held in large fields or abandoned warehouses. they usually gathered 3 to 5 thousand people and it lasted 3 or 4 days. when i asked her if the cops busted parties often she said "pas vraiment, ils sont vraiment dur a trouver les rave parties. ils sont pas légal, allors personne demande la permission et ils en font pas la pub. faut que tu soit dans le coup pour savoir ou c'est."

then i asked her if they had PLUR over there. she was like "c'est quoi ca... PAHLURE?" when i explained she had no clue what i was talking about, but she said it was a cute concept. when i asked her about T.A.Z, she still had no idea what i was talking about, but said "c'est plutot comme ca que ton ... PAHLURE? c'est comme ca qu'on dit? PAHLURE?"

she was so cute.

at around 6 they had to leave, it was their last day in montreal and they were leaving for somewhere else that night. we exchanged addresses and promised to keep in touch.

next summer i think i'll be going to france. besides the fact that they still have real raves there, they told me about their quieter lifestyle, the good food, the cheap booze, the primo hash, the endless supply of skatespots. the fact that you're asked "watcha doing this weekend?" you can answer "oh, i'm going for dinner in spain, desert in italy and then maybe go down a few slopes in switzerland... nothing special."

i think i'm more made for the european lifestyle.

oh, and there isn't some special message about that rave stuff. it's just maybe for you guys to know that what you think is a rave, isn't.

Sounds like a great time but uhh, whats the point? France has good raves and there's lots to do? And their partys are different from ours? So what. Thats what makes travelling so much fun cuz u get to experience things their way...

the parties in europe make the parties here look like nothing. In the UK there have been 20,000 people at some huge underground parties.

In europe there is no underground scene... It's all commercial... I was there for 4 months in France... The top 10 songs were all electronic and this was in 1997 i think...

I agree, Europe is more avant-garde because they have the scene for it; they can pretty much do whatever and be sure that they will reach a scene...what you hear in after hours in Mtl it plays on the radio over there...!
I mean it s all about the $ too, underground or not, they don t throw a party without making sure people will come! dahh.

lets be realistic, rave culture doesn t change from a to z bcs of the contry!.! ravers are ravers! even the .....

everyone's got their opinion...

mine, france is great...
i had a blast there, and all i did was ski...
...
and party n drink

but you can't compare the two...

The Montreal scene still has good in it, even if you don't see it...

but yeah, the quieter lifestyle, is definetly chill...

yeah there is no underground now because their "underground" scene started in like 1988 and went mainstream the way hip-hop went mainstream here...

The only place i saw some decent parties last time i was in europe was in The Netherlands.

But it's great being able to travel so easily through the different countries, i agree. My mom lives in Geneva, Switzerland, and hell i walk over the border into France and go do my groceries there (sooo much cheaper and amazing quality)...
