 Coolness: 265905 | I have a pretty old WD My Book external HDD and it's getting so that it's more and more unreliable everyday; it randomly stops reading files or can't find them anymore and whatnot, until I reboot and things are back to normal. Seeing as how I don't want to lose both my shit and the hundreds of gigs of files I have on it one day, I'm looking into buying a new external HDD but...
I was once nominated top IT on ravewave, and sadly, them glory days are far behind now (who'd a thunk it), and I was wondering what you top-notch cats full of swagger and geek knowledge had to recommend, that wouldn't fail me so bad as this stupid My Book.  |

 Coolness: 146275 | I always buy Seagate Barracudas, top quality and decent prices on [ tigerdirect.ca ] (home delivery) or [ sigmawave.com ] (du Parc / Milton).
LACIEs are also good, especially for travel. If you want to move your HDD a lot, you want solid state and 2.5" (smaller); then go for LACIE. Otherwise, buy a standard-sized HDD (3.5") because it's faster and cheaper; then go for Seagate. Avoid the ones with "automatic backups" or extra software bullcrap, it's never really useful and it messes up with data eventually. |

Has the double advantage of enabling you to switch HDDs super easily, put a new one it, blahblahblah. I bought a Vantec one aeons ago (quite literally), carried it all over, dropped countless times (not from super high heights but still..) and the ONLY thing that managed to fuck on it was the blue LED, which now flickers instead of being on all the time. I mean I havent moved it at all since I buyed it, I just plugged the freakin thing and start downloading and transfering stuff on it and the very cool part about it is that it came already formated ^^ I never dropped it once, never leaved my app. once, working fine, and the price 100$ each. so 200$ for 4TB. |

| Coolness: 158720 | Dee, it is EXACTLY that. The cheapest Vantec enclosure will turn pretty much any 3.5in SATA HDD into a plug-and-play USB2.0 external HD. You can also pay a bit more for a combo USB/Firewire, there's even some network enabled ones.
Kuzu, well that's what YOU need 'em for. Some of us appreciate being able to move large files, even IF USB keys are getting larger and larger. ... Now, I stand by my suggestion. The only downside IS, HDDs ARE more expensive these days. Something in Thailand or Taiwan or something  |

| Coolness: 265905 | It's not the dropping I have a problem with, my hd stays on my desk almost permanently, there have been several issues with different people unplugging my WD hdd in very unorthodox manners which caused major shitstorms in regards to files being lost and corrupted and the drive itself acting retarded to the point of having to format a couple of times. I'm kind of confused, what exactly would be the difference between a regular external HDD (ie. my WD My Book) and having to use an enclosure to turn a regular hdd into an external one? Hence why I needed an external HD, which I bought, I don't know, years ago. It was great at first and eventually came the "holy shit this is slow" and now the "goddamn it, it won't read anything again" every couple of days. With an enclosure, you can just buy a new internal HDD if you ever fill up the one you put in it. You can use it to salvage your PC's HDD and transfer files elsewhere if your PC ever fucks up (obviously, not if the HDD itself fails, but I hope you get my point). It has NEVER failed on me, and I've had it for close to 10 years now, IIRC. I was actually surprised they look exactly the same as the one I have. I mean, this way, YOU get to choose what HD you put in it. I've plugged and unplugged my enclosure in many different PCs and in very unorthodox ways, NEVER failed on me. Metal case. Solid. And you can actually very easily remove it IF something goes wrong. Easier to troubleshoot the HD IF something goes wrong. IF. Anyway. Somekid has one too, he's also very enthusiastic about it. Definitely one of the best purchases I ever made. |

| Coolness: 158720 | Well speed will be limited by the USB ports of your computer, mostly (since it looks like an old piece of crap, no offense  )... So no, it's not a huge can of worms.
I just had a longer look, and well, an enclosure that does USB 3.0 / 2.0 / 1.0 and supports up to 2TB HDDs is 46$. [ sigmawave.com ] You ACTUALLY should make sure you buy a decent HDD. Either one you'd eventually move to a desktop computer, or y'know, something from a solid brand. It's super easy to install a HDD in one of those, takes about 5 minutes if you're lousy with computers. And again, I've dropped mine countless times (sometimes even from desk height), stuffed it loose in a backpack, plugged it in some weird ass-computers (do be careful with viruses), had it tip over cuz I can't be arsed to use that little stand thingy it comes from... NEVER failed on me. |
