I have Traktor Scratch pro with Audio 8 box - using Windows 7 on a Gateway nv54 laptop

I was having a problem with clipping on some recordings last week. I dont mean the obvious cause from too much bass at too high volume pusing into the reds.. I mean clipping sounds even when recording at low levels with reduced bass. some tracks were still randomly getting little clippy noises in the recording when I listened to it later. so I had to scrap some otherwise perfectly good recordings. this was a new glitch for sure. other than this recent problem I've been using it with no troubles since January this year

so I thought updating the Audio 8 driver might help, but my "Windows Installer" mysteriously stopped working a few weeks back. can't do shit without it. tried to fix it myself, finally I took the laptop in to a shop for them to try and fix that issue. they told me best thing to do was back up and reinstall Windows 7

so- now I've re-installed Traktor, and when I try and set my preferences the keys stick - trying to select output input and recording, latency etc. clearly something wrong with that

when I hit record, I dont see any levels. a little box ops up saying "audio-recording could not be started!" I can still use the timecoded vinyl.. but just cant seem to set it up properly the way I had it before. very frustrating. i tried importing my old settings with no luck

I've also posted on the Native instruments Traktor pro technical issues forum, but the 3 times I've ever asked questions, no moderator ever replied.. so I thought I'd try here

*dying* to get a mix recorded this weekend

anyone?

this won't answer your question directly, but who knows, maybe something in this list might help out at least...

Remember when we were recording at my place and we could hear us talking during the mix? Make sure you are routing only to your external sound card, could be as simple as that

Could be more complex too, but...

lol =)

ya I dunno what to do man! I've re-installed Traktor and the Audio 8 driver 3 times. I recall it took me a few days to get it running properly and work all the bugs when I first got it. I wish I could just press a button and restore my old settings.

if I was a rich man I'd just pay some Native Instruments tech guy to drive to my house this afternoon and set it up - lol. I'm in a really creative mood the past few days - I'm dying to bang out some mixes with all these records and post em online.

but the thing is I mainly use Traktor as a soundcard to record, and occasionally for the timecoded vinyl. since my laptop doesn't have a proper soundcard, and my MDR is broken, Traktor is the only way I can record anything. so until I sort this out I'm S.O.L.

I have one mix I did last week that turned out ok - only one or two brief points where it made that clipping noise. maybe I should just upload that

it might be stupid but is your fx are off?
maybe its beatmasher or something.
did you also checked lock software on the audio card config?

haha jokes =) I might do that actually - i'll review the mix and see how it sounds. I was playing it last night as I drifted off to sleep and the one recording I found was pretty clean, from what I listened to.

well it seems the fx are off. I have to admit I'm pretty ignorant about these things so I really appreciate this help. I seem to have hit a brick wall, having re-installed it several times, and I'm still getting sticky, laggy response when trying to set up my preferences.

on the Audio 8 box this is what it looks like right now: I've always had it in 5/6 - I never unplugged anything from the Audio 8 box when I re-installed.

the software lock thing is highlighted, obviously, but the input mode button doesn't change any of these settings when I hit it. I don't recall intentionally setting it to "software lock" and I can't figure out how to change it. I'm looking in the settings so far and not seeing anything. googling now to see if I can solve that. *hopefully* if i fix that it'll come back to normal

mmm, i just realize what you meant.

are you sure thats possible?

well the Traktor Audio 8 is the soundcard. the onboard soundcard that came with the computer only has a mic input so it cant be used to record at all. the Traktor records my sets to my harddrive as a raw .wav which I later open it up in soundforge to edit, convert to mp3 etc

hehe. I was justing watch that same video you posted to see if it had any info =) it's actually great info for people starting up on how to record, but doesnt cover this problem I'm having.

I re-installed again, and this time used the latest updated driver and a different USB slot. it installed ok, this time the locked software light finally disappeared and I can now toggle using the input mode button.. now the timecoded vinyl works, I'm getting levels on the box and in the meter, but still every time I get the same pop up window when I hit the record button that says: "audio recording could not be started"

I'm almost there. now I just have to figure out what setting I need to change, and I'll be off to the races

Can't you get a RCA to 1/8 inch wire, and plug your mixer into the mic input, then record with something like Soundforge? Does that not float your boat 'cause the recording will probably be in mono?

Along similar lines, can't you use that Soundcard with another program to record with? It might Give you an idea as to whether the problem is purely Hardware or Software ...

Obviously I don't know much about Traktor stuffs ... but getting clipping sounds without clipping seems to be a very strange dilemma o_O

I'm no pro at this.
But dosen't Soundforge support stereo recording?

yup, but a mic input does not... But in most case, the mic input is also a stereo line input

ya I dunno if it was actually clipping but it sure sounded like it. similar clicky clippy sounds that you hear if you have levels too high.

I used to use a mic input on another laptop for soundforge. that's how I sucessfully recorded a bunch of mixes. I just kept the level really low. but not on this one. I tried, believe me! it's next-level crappy for recording audio. you'd think any decent laptop manufacturer would install a basic soundcard with a line input at the factory, but not all do. I would've bought one with a proper card but this one was a gift. so I tried to get levels in Soundforge with it, and it comes out as this very weak very scratchy distorted waveform. unusable

so my only option with that laptop is to get an external soundcard. so I got TSP with the Audio 8 box functioning as my soundcard. anything I wanna record - a movie sample, tape cassette or a record... it goes thru my Pioneer 600 -> my Audio 8 box -> the Traktor software on my laptop, and then I open up the Traktor recording in soundforge. the actual laptop soundcard only does playback.

some techies on websites were asking me to send them screenshots. rather than do that, last night I made this little video. if anyone sees something glaringly wrong with my settings let me know! and thanks all for your feedback. I've contacted Native Instruments on youtube and on their website but they haven't replied yet - I'll be interested to hear what they have to say.

yeah, my toughts too. I can imagine an onboard audio apperature with only a mono mic in.
But don't most performant audio aperature support stereo?

Maybe it's just one of your wires. When I record the vocals for my radio show, the jack I use the plug the mic in has recently been acting up, and I get these big clicky sounds. Gotta play around with the adapter to get it to sit just right so I don't have the noise.

Wires are assholes. Almost every single noise/sound-fuckery problem I've had over the years with gear has been faulty/broken wiring.

Under all circumstances:
Trouble-shooting step 4 - change the wires! xD

ya it could've been a wire. or possibly just needed the latest Audio 8 driver and TSP updates. but now, the problem is that I can't record at all. at least last week, most of the recordings were turning out ok. now I can't do a damn thing.

it's cool though. I'm flying in a team from the Native Instruments HQ in Berlin this evening.

lol. well actually in early 2001, my very first demo I ever handed out to promoters was on cassette. I didn't own a computer at the time so I had no other option. but in 2004, I was doing a live broadcast on an internet station. my crappy soundcard was busy broadcasting and couldn't record at the same time. so I used my other record outs from my mixer to my tape deck, and then later I made an mp3 of the tape recording. this one right here ->

I figured it's better to have a tape recording of a live set than nothing at all, right? so I put it up on this website, and some scoundrel gave it a 1/5 rating!! they left a bitchy review saying they didn't even bother to listen to it because the bitrate was unacceptably low. lol. I was surprised. if you have a listen to it, I think it's ok. it's obviously not great sound quality but it's good enough. but it made me realize how times have changed.

in the 90s people were perfectly happy paying good money for underground mixtapes and taping radio broadcasts on cassette. that was the norm. nowadays people are spoiled. they expect all this free music to be made instantly available to them in CD quality. [/shakes cane]

omg omg omg

just a few minutes ago, I was almost completely out of ideas for a way to solve this. but I decided to close Traktor and right-click on the icon - "run as administrator". well, after opening it like that, recording worked instantly!!!! and the recording quality sounds *great* !!! I recorded it at a nice loud level, and when I played it back it sounded really crisp - none of the problems I had last week.

amazing! It never had to be run as admin before, but whatever works. I'm so happy! I'm getting right down to some mixing =)
