So, when I boot my PC, it goes through the memory test, IDE identification etc etc, gets to the second screen, where at the bottom of the page, it says:

"Verifying DMI Pool Data................
NTLDR is missing
Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart."

usually of course, it gets past the verification and windows xp then starts up.

I didn't do any hardware changes prior to this, or any big software installations or anything.
I copied some photos from a USB stick, and then while checking them out, in a flash, my computer restarted and then started giving me that "NTLDR is missing" message.

Any ideas??

Unplug that stick?
Looks like there might've been some boot info on it.

NTLDR is the loader Windows NT (core of Win NT and XP), which is the starting point of windows at boot time. Wally's link is quite clear and more complete than any answer you could get here, so I won't add anything more :P

I put in my win xp cd, started the "repair existing windows" option, but it didn't even recognize there was a windows installation on my C: drive.

I think I'm just gonna put a new drive in, and re-install all my shit again. Then when the fresh install is done, I'll plug the old drive into my external case, to retreive any important files.

It was a pretty good 2 year run on the same windows installation

Just use Windows 7... I don't know why anyone uses XP any more. Especially when there is a fully working cracked version of Windows 7 which updates to SP1 without problems. It will even repair your boot record for you automatically if needed.

yeah, also if you've got a multi-core CPU, using XP is just stupid, you'd be better off with Vista.

XP works with multi-core CPUs by "filling up" one at a time before switching to the next.. so like if you run like seven programs, it'll keep loading them to the same core until that core gets overloaded and slow, then it'll switch to the next core.. So like you run six programs and they're all on one core, and those programs run slow as a turtle, but your 7th program then gets switched to a new core so that one runs fast while everything else is still crammed into the first core..

I'm using the same PC that i built in 2003. XP runs fine with it. Thanks for the input, but I don't think Vista or 7 will run smoothly on my old beast.

From my memory, you have to go into the first repair mode option, going into command line. Create a backup of the old NTLDR (NTLDR-related info?) and then copy a new one into the old one's path.

I slapped in a Win XP home edition disc, and it only gave me 3 options.

install windows
repair
and cancel or something...

I didn't see anything after the first repair choice, but, continue....

you think there is a difference between home and pro installation discs?
