God did not create Universe: Hawking

(AFP) – Sep 2, 2010

LONDON — God no longer has any place in theories on the creation of the Universe due to a series of developments in physics, British scientist Stephen Hawking said in extracts published Thursday from a new book.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going," added the wheelchair-bound expert.

In his latest work, Hawking cites the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting a star outside our own Solar System as a turning point against Isaac Newton's belief that the Universe could not have arisen out of chaos.

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass -- far less remarkable, and far less compelling as evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he wrote.

Hawking argued earlier this year that mankind's only chance of long-term survival lies in colonising space, as humans drain Earth of resources and face a terrifying array of new threats.

He also warned in a recent television series that mankind should avoid contact with aliens at all costs, as the consequences could be devastating.

ok...

1) Don't believe in god
2) Colonize space
3) Avoid contact with aliens or consequences will never be the same

I think I got it.

What if we find calorie-dense alien animals/plants that are much more efficient to produce than earthly livestock/produce? That could be a godsend (or chaossend, sorry Mr. Hawking) for humanity.

That said, he's right that there's a good chance contact with aliens would be disastrous. We would have no immunity to whatever microscopic beings are out there on another planet, and this would be the perfect setup for an epidemic.

It would probably be the other way around, think of the American Indians. Its hard to believe that somewhere in the universe there's a more filthy creature than the human.

Good point. I'd say, chances are that contact between two planets with complex ecosystems would be disastrous for the larger organisms on both. The viruses and microorganisms would have a field day.

It wouldn't be like that.. Humans aren't made for space, so some branch of humanity will probly evolved by genetic whatever-scientific term into living in long deep space travel in zero G. Aliens, if they exist, could very well take the same paths. The first encounter is likely between these deep space scouts who will look more like each other then their respective species 'cause they were adapted to do the same job so to say.

Then again, these "aliens" could have been humans that were send off a long time ago and we forgotten about them. They could have evolved into something totally different that we might as well mistaken them for aliens.

-------

Hawking is just spewing the 3rd point 'cause he wants to bring Astrophysics into mainstream or whatnot by using "fear" as method. Hide from aliens, wtf? At least get their numbers..

Oh. Well, I think that there's a much, much higher chance of humans finding life on another planet than there is of us running into a shuttle from another planet.

Don't you think that with we now know about planets that there's a good chance there's another sentient specie out there close to, or even surpassing, our technical capabilities?

IMO, I think there's some terrifyingly more advanced than us but they don't like what they see and we're not a threat so stay away. By the time we do become a small threat and we haven't changed our outlook, they'd show up and Hawkins prediction would become true.

It's just the imperialist philosophy... We won't sell our resources to anyone! *boom* *boom* *boom* Thank you for those nice cars, assault rifles & money Mr. Corporate, I'll make suuure none of my peers come close to those extraction plants.

I was thinking about sentient intelligent lifeforms. Anyhow basic life is already found on another planet: Mars. Well at least in its past.

I think the chance of another intelligent alien life with extra-solar space faring capabilities in the same time line as us (and happens to be next door) is highly improbable.

Didd those studies consider sentience might develop in environments harsher than Earth's one?

Or that conditions not known to us might have other recipe than Earth's one to bear similar lifeforms? A lot of scientific evolution due to serendipity and everyone's happy to give their approval once a discovery is made but don't learn that their previous philosophy wasn't conducive to it ; fact research & analysis isn't only at play for advancement.

Tendencies, just like statistics or "sacred" words, can be interpreted from different POVs.

wow I messed the 2nd paragraph! there might recipes to life totally unknown to science. making studies sound certain that the current technique enclose everything is shortsighted ; just like someone said "No one will need more than 637 kb of memory for a personal computer." but I currently would make it a priority to get more if I had less than 1.5Gb.
